A chirping noise wakes you up. What the fuck. It happens again, and then you hear a weird 'ch-ch-ch-ch-ch' noise, too. Blearily, you open your eyes to find Diego's phone on the floor in front of your face. It lights up and chirps again to indicate a text from Julio. Above you, the chattering noise happens again.
"Are… are you chattering at the phone because it sounds like a bird?"
You ask Diego wryly. Your pillow shifts as Diego huffs and leans over to look at you. Ears pinned back, he narrows golden eyes to give you a nicely solid glare. The phone chirps again. Diego opens his mouth to chatter again but ruthlessly suppresses it. Its a level of adorable that might be lethal. You offer, "Do you want me to get that with my opposable thumbs?"
He dumps you to the floor in retaliation as you titter. The texts are from Julio, just checking in, tell Gordita to pick up her damn phone, stop licking her long enough to answer damnit, etc. You send him back proof of life, the selfie quite clearly displays Diego rolling his eyes while you beam in obvious nudity barely hidden under his tail.
You text Julio a seemingly innocent question:
How fast can you get your hands on a box truck?
--------------------
Its only 8:47pm and Diego is pacing the confines of the common area. He steps over things casually and winds around furniture sinuously. You wander into the kitchen and dig snacks out of the fridge. The blast of cold air from the industrial strength unit hardens your nipples. When you turn around to set down your finds Diego is on the breakfast bar; he half lays so his forelegs are hanging above the sink, with his chest on the counter, all while his butt is sitting on the floor on the other side.
Fucking. Huge. Murdercat.
"You want pork?" The package of meat is held up in offering and Diego licks over his whiskers. You plunk the five pounds of meat down and reach for the butcher block when a soft noise makes you look up.
"Mrrrr? Mrrr-rah?" Those golden eyes flit from your face to the faucet and back again. That has to be infuriating, to be so dependent on others. You turn on the cold water and step back to the meat to give him room. "Meh meh."
"You're welcome."
You both freeze and slowly lock eyes. Diego's stare is calculating.
"Rrrrrhisss." He watches you closely as he talks.
"Kiss." You answer
"Mrrrrp?" His head cocks and his ears tremble.
"Please." You set down the knife and give him your full attention.
"Rrrroh." The smaller front incisors are visible with this vocalization.
"No." You supply.
"Mrr-rrrrow!" He stands up on his hind legs but stays sprawled over the counter.
"Gimme, I want." Your translation requires no thought.
"Mrrrbpt!" His sides move with the effort required to expel the noise forcefully.
"Hey! You're startled, or an exclamation." Your arms cross over your bare chest.
"Ch-ch-ch-ch-ch." Diego wrinkles his nose and chatters with flared whiskers.
"Something has your attention and you would like to investigate it more closely, preferably with your tongue." The challenging lift of your brow pleases him. Diego purrs and arches his back like a housecat when it rubs your legs. You smile and offer him a logical explanation, "All of your noises are like the center of a Venn diagram where one side is 'Diego' and the other is just 'Cats'. You make perfect sense to me, baby."
The plastic comes off of the meat and you set the styrofoam tray over in front of him. Diego is gaping at you, the water and food utterly ignored, and he blinks slowly. You reach out to put your beringed left hand on his muzzle and blink slowly back at him in return, "I love you, too."
Diego rattles at you with squinty eyes and relaxed ears before turning back to the stream of filtered water. His tongue flickers out quickly as he drinks while you watch in silence. You remember the first time you saw him like this, he had actually been embarrassed to let you observe him while eating. Now your hand is still on his cheek as he drinks messily.
As he turns to the meat you round the bar and sit on a barstool next to him to eat your cheese and cashews. Diego glances down at you, posture so obviously relaxed and comfortable, then slowly starts on the meat. You pet his broad side idly with your free hand while the other pops bites into your mouth and you stare off into space contentedly.
"Are you up for an adventure?" You proposition casually. Diego purrs louder but continues eating unhurriedly. His fur parts under your fingers, the rich brown underneath reveals his pattern of spots. You slide off the barstool and hug him tight, "I'm going to get dressed."
------------
Julio and Bastian have arrived by the time you come back downstairs in sneakers, leggings, and a t-shirt. They're showing Diego stuff on their phones, seems like a mixture of business and pleasure.
"Gordita! We got an eighteen foot truck. Biggest they had." Julio hugs you in greeting.
"Good. That should work. Did you get the directions?" You turn to Bastian who nods an affirmative. "Perfect. Now you," here you pause to reach up under Diego's chin and scritch. His posture melts and his eyes squint happily, "Do you need more food or anything for a couple hours?"
It takes your very large cat a few very long moments to process your question and formulate an answer. "Rrrrrrroh."
Julio and Bastian both look tense and bewildered by this conversation.
"Okay, let's take a ride then. Oh, grab the blanket." You pat Diego's chest and he does as you ask. He steps over Bastian, who ducks quickly, and snatches up the purple blanket. It trails down from that huge maw and Diego has to step wide and awkwardly to avoid tripping on it. You take the blanket from him and fold it haphazardly before shoving it in Julio's face to smother his smirk. Do not make him self-conscious.
You can't all fit in the freight elevator so Julio and Bastian go first, while you and Diego follow. The truck is backed up as close a possible to the doors and you watch in awe as Diego jumps gracefully into the back. The truck dips a bit under his weight but then Diego settles down on his side and looks back for you.
Your climb in is much less graceful but your baby helps by boosting your butt with his tail. Julio tosses you the blanket and you snuggle into the large ribcage as he closes the roll door. Looking to those big eyes, you check on Diego, "You good? Drive should take about an hour."
Diego blinks a yes and lays his head across (over??) your lap. He dozes there for most of the trip, popping one eye open and grumbling at the particularly rough bumps. You can tell when Bastian turns off the state road and onto the park access road. Diego sits upright with alertness, looking to you to see if everything is okay. You scratch his shoulders gently in a soothing manner.
"We're here. He just has to park somewhere. I think you're way overdue for this." You smile sharply. Diego narrows his eyes in consideration, you can hear the wheels turning as he tries to figure this out. Finally, the truck stops and the engine shuts off, Julio opens the roll door with a grin.
The view is forest. Just dense trees and shrubbery as far as the eye can see. The sounds of crickets and other insects float through the air, you can smell the pine, and leaves cover the forest floor to crunch as you get out.
Diego hops down behind you. He grimaces at the crunching foliage under his pads, but then a sudden gust of wind skitters some leaves along and his instincts roar to life. A giant paw slaps down on the escaping leaves, more roll by like tiny deciduous tumbleweeds and Diego swipes frantically at all of them in rapid succession.
"Mrr! Mrrrrrrpt, mrr, mrr, mrrr-rrow!" He hops around with each little noise, flinging leaves every which way. His spots shine in the patchy moonlight as he raises a paw to shake off a leaf impaled on a claw. An owl hoots above you and the massive head whips around to peer upward from his outstretched neck. Diego chatters intensely as he searches for the bird.
If your smile grows any more your face might split in half. Already, your heart is cracked wide open for this predator you love so dearly. Julio and Bastian are frozen next to the truck. Bastian is staring rudely, but Julio has both hands covering his face to hide the laughter. You shoot them both a warning look before your attention returns to Diego. The owl hoots again and then takes flight, high above the trees and far out of reach. Diego turns to you with huge eyes, pupils as black as the night sky.
"Meh meh?" He asks very seriously. His whiskers are flared wide out in front of him, trembling with his straining focus.
"Yeah, I did see it. We gotta find one a little lower for you, though." You answer fondly. Diego seems to suddenly remember the guys and turns around quickly. Bastian flinches but Julio stays perfectly still. You imagine he has much more experience at this.
"Go play, Manito. We'll wait here. Take Gordita and wear yourself out." His best friend urges quietly. Bastian nods nervously and offers a bland smile. Diego glares at them imperiously for a moment before the facade crumbles and he yips at Julio. "Yeah, yeah." Julio waves him off.
Your smaller stride carries you into the woods steadily, but Diego's longer legs mean he bounds past you quickly. His dark fur disappears into the gloom and you're suddenly very alone. Being alone in the woods isn't new for you, being alone in the woods with a supernatural apex predator is a little bit different. You can feel Diego watching you, but there's no physical indication of his presence.
A twig snapping to your right makes you turn quickly, there's nothing there. Some small creature moves around behind you, rustling the underbrush, but whatever it is has to be shorter than your knees so its no threat. A breeze picks up and you can smell his scent on the air, He has to be close. A shiver rolls down your back, your hindbrain is very aware that you are prey.
Something goes crunch above your head and hot breath washes down your neck. You spin and look up… to see nothing.
"Okay, clearly you're having fun here." The chuckle that tumbles out of you is shrill and a tiny bit nervous. Diego rhee-laughs and the noise is still above you. The branches of the oak trees over your head creak and it occurs to you that Diego has climbed the tree. "Wow baby, that's verrrrry panther of you to be up there."
Menacingly, the gargantuan head descends from the canopy inch by inch, beginning with the most dangerous part: his fangs gleaming in the moonlight. You step back, you can't help it, and Diego rattles low in his throat. The inky darkness of the cloudy night sky beyond means that his body is lost to your human vision. The big, round ears flick in your direction as he sniffs you from a good fifteen feet in the air. His irises expand a little as his pupils contract, what he smells isn't pleasing him.
Diego drops to the ground in front of you almost soundlessly. The tree branch slingshots back up in a cacophony. Diego comes to you steadily, he is aware that you're feeling something very akin to fear. You breathe, "You can smell it, can't you?"
He tucks his forehead in along the length of your body and begins purring soothingly. Your entire torso vibrates as you relax.
"Its pure instinct. I know you don't mean me any harm. Ever." Who you're reassuring here is up for debate. "Why don't you run? Stretch out. Destroy some things with those wicked claws."
"Rrrrrrrrrrrrrraahh. Mrrrbt." He nudges you along while you trip and giggle. You dart off between some trees and Diego follows in little hops. Childhood habits are hard to break, as soon as you find a suitable tree you start climbing. Diego boops your butt with his nose as you become level with his head.
"Oh my god, there's a bird nest in here!" You whisper excitedly. There are three little eggs, all freezing cold and abandoned, inside a tiny riot of twigs and scraps. Peering over the side, you poke at an egg again just be sure, Yep, definitely orphaned. You know that no life is coming out of this.
Your hair flutters around as Diego stands up on hind legs behind you to sniff furiously, his head hovering over your own. Leaning to the side, you give him room to check out the discovery. His big nose inhales harshly as he pokes at the find.
… And then your treasure is promptly eaten.
"Cats gonna cat!" You shriek with laughter.
Diego shakes his head as if coming out of a trance, then spits out a stick. His ears flutter as he makes a face at the taste, his tongue flashing out rapidly until a wad of wet plastic is also expelled.
"Rrrugh. Ahhh-ech." Cat gagging noises are even more upsetting at mutated sizes. Something in the next tree over makes a small crash and Diego is On It ™. He tears off in pursuit while you do a controlled fall to the ground. You can mostly follow his trail, but he is so much faster that you lose him quickly. Heading back to the formerly robin home, you wait him out.
It doesn't take long before large sounds are coming from your right. You watch closely until certain that its your Murder Panther and not like, oh, a black bear. He has an odd expression.
"What's wrong, baby?" You're instantly concerned.
Diego flicks his ears, his tail twitches nervously, and he makes a mournful little moan. "Mrrrrrr-wrrr."
"What?" Your hands reach up for him just as Diego drops a dead rabbit at your feet.
Oh no. You blink a few times, reining in your emotional response, before pointing to the offering. "You got this for me?" The soft question sounds fearful. Diego whines a little and crouches, his tail is tucked tight to his side. He watches you from the corner of his eyes, aiming for nonchalance.
Carefully, you step over the carcass and touch a big ear to whisper in wonderment, "Thank you, baby. I know I've said it before, but nobody has ever taken care of me like you do. You do it so well."
You snuggle into his pelt as he purrs madly, preening under your praise. His relief is palpable, it really seems like maybe he can't help himself about some of this. You vow to protect his feelings at all costs.
"You're an amazing partner. You know that, right, baby?" Diego melts all over you.
"Rrrrrrrrrraw. Mrrrr, mrrrrr. Mrr-rrrrow." He whines as he doubles over to rub his forehead on you. Scratching directly between his happy blinky eyes gets you a blep and kissing his nose is irresistible. Smoothing over those long whiskers, you squish his face and Diego parts his lips to purr-pant.
"So. I have more questions." Diego opens one eye to squint at you suspiciously. You giggle but go on, "How fast do you think you are? Have you ever scratched things? Can I ride you?"
The last bit is out before you can stop it or the accompanying wince. Diego sits up straight, pulling his head from your grasp and disappointing you with his loss. You step back to ease the angle of your neck while looking up at him and Diego stands up on hind legs again to reach out to the tree. Your neck cranes as you track his forepaws landing among the branches. Those frighteningly impressive claws emerge as he stretches out and they sink into the wide trunk with little resistance. Your jaw steadily drops open ever further with each passing second as Diego shaves off feet of bark in curling sheets while sharpening his claws.
"God. Damn." You whisper in awe. The musculature on display is… mind boggling. And hot, the little voice in your brain gutter helpfully chirps. Unable to lie even to yourself, you have to admit that he is an amazing specimen. As far as felines go he is perfectly formed for his species; long and solid, lower to the ground than, say, a lion, but his slightly shorter legs are rippling with power. His tail is extra long, as leopards' tails are wont to be, and curved gracefully into the air. The massive paws are staggering in terms of coverage, his shoulders are still ridiculously broad, and the neck just as thick as always. The glowing eyes that gaze down at you shimmer with depth and emotion, so very Diego.
Okay, so there's a bit of a calculating leer. It is Diego, after all.
He leans down slowly, advancing into your personal space with no hesitation, only to poke his nose into your crotch.
"Eyy!" You yelp and squirm away.
"Rrrrrrahhhh. Rhee-rhee-rhee. Rrrurihh?" It starts as a self satisfied laugh, but ends in a question. One that you are failing to translate.
"What?" The gentle concern in your voice makes you feel soft. Its out of your control, that's what this man does to you.
"Rrrrrrryyyyyy?" Diego rumbles and then snaps his jaw shut decisively at the end. He is definitely trying to say a specific word but you have no idea which one. His shoulders rise and fall rapidly in a frustrated huff, ears droop to the sides, too.
"Why don't you try to show me." You encourage. Diego looks around as if someone might be spying on you two out in the middle of the woods of upstate New York at two in the morning. He leans down and flattens his chest to the ground, then nudges you down the side of his body. When back away from him he uses his cheek to keep you close. The shoulder closest to you, his right, drops as he stretches that front leg out.
"Oh!" The realization dawns on you violently. Diego is offering you a ride. You have to jump, but you make it onto his back with minimal wriggling. Your knees are tucked behind his shoulders, you don't want to pull on his fur so you lean forward to lower your center of gravity. His breadth spreads your legs wide and his body temperature runs hotter like this. It feels amazing on your pussy.
"Okay, I like this." You mutter lowly with a devious grin. Diego's ears flick at the sound of your voice and he laughs again. You squeeze tight with your legs as he starts forward, the movements against you are very pleasant. "Baby," you breathe, "This is awesome!"
Diego rumbles a warning, you can feel him tensing beneath you, then breaks into a loping stride through the forest. This is nowhere near his top speed, he isn't even breathing hard, but its way faster than you can run. You have to duck down, flatten yourself to his back, to avoid low branches. He twists and winds through the vegetation as you laugh yelpingly.
Finally, Diego skids to a halt and dumps you over his head like an unruly horse. You land in a heap of leaves and roll around happily.
"Rrrrrruh-nck." Diego issues an order with a final snapping shut of his teeth, and you look up to find him watching you with black eyes, flattened ears, and a lashing tail. He leans close enough for you to see the texture of his tongue when he speaks again, "Rrrrrruh-nck!"
Run.
You're up and racing away before you can process that you understood. The huge crashes in the underbrush behind you are terrifying, but its the silence that follows that makes ice climb your spine. You can see the truck, its still open, Julio is sitting on the lift gate with his phone.
Julio must hear you because he looks up and then dives away. One glance behind you shows why: Diego is chasing you at full speed from a distance that is rapidly shrinking. His huge claws are visible with every stride and the low roar he rumbles upon seeing you seeing him almost makes you pee your pants. You dive into the back of the truck and crash into the front wall.
You can see the moment Diego realizes his mistake. He is traveling at almost max speed, there are trees on each side of the truck, there is no way he can stop in time. You curl up in a ball in the corner and brace yourself.
Diego bounds into the truck and skids into the nose of the compartment. His claws peel up large curls of the metal floor in a deafening screech as he tries to slow himself. You duck low and Diego smashes into the wall above you with a huge crash. The truck slides forward for an infinite moment and you're smothered under furry Diego bulk.
The sound of Julio dying of laughter is audible over the both of you panting. Diego tenses until you guffaw joyously and hug as much of him as your arms can encompass. The hoarse 'rhee' of his mirth is beautiful to you and the two of you roll around in the truck like children. Diego slumps on his side to catch his breath, his tail floats lazily in the air under the open roll door.
Bastian is peering inside with concern, "You okay, boss?"
"Rrrrrrowwwwww. Meh meh." The huge meow echoes in the enclosed space.
You call out to his BFF, "Julio, did you grab the--"
"Sí, Gordita." Julio appears around the side and tosses a large bucket to your waiting hands. A bunch of liter sized bottles of water are next (Julio rolls them rather than throws) and you pour the water into the container. Diego watches you with keen interest, his whiskers quiver as he licks his lips. You push the bucket to him gently and sit back to shoot a meaningful glare at his men who dissolve into the shadows. No one is allowed to make your baby feel uncomfortable.
Diego sniffs the water, his big nose dips ever closer until he inhales some of the liquid and then snorts angrily. His whiskers flick droplets all over your giggling face.
"Its clean, I made them wash it first. I got you, babe." The soft reassurance combined with the pet name seems to ease his concerns and Diego drinks. You drink from the last bottle while slumped next to him. The huge tongue mostly fits but he is splashing you accidentally, you refuse to flinch away. Most of the water is consumed when Diego decides to bite the plastic bucket.
"Uhh, what are you doing?" You're concerned here. Diego freezes mid-crush to roll his eyes up to you. He looks preposterously guilty.
"Rrrrghhh rahhh?" The muffled sound of his answer is stupidly adorable. Diego tries to drop the bucket but its now impaled on a fang. He gives you a piteous blink and your hands are moving to assist before you know it.
"Okay, give me this--" the bucket pops off with a bwonk, "And let me see." Diego opens his mouth wide obligingly. There, in the very back of the left side, is a stick wedged between his molars. With no hesitation, you reach tiny hands inside that terrifying maw and pry the offending object loose. The stick is covered in slippery cat slobber, and now so are your hands. Tossing the stick and wiping your hands on the blanket is your only viable course of action.
"You ready to go home? Or you need to do zoomies some more yet?" Watching him closely is amusing, his ears tremble and twitch as he thinks. You intervene gently, "That looks like home, to me."
"Rrrrrah!" Diego pants happily in your face. His big nose nudges into your belly again and he coos quietly.
Julio appears and shouts, "Look what we found by the picnic tables!"
A big orange ball is held triumphantly over the bodyguard's head. Diego lurches upright with a mrrp and cocks his ears far forward. Is he seriously gonna play with a nasty ass random ball Julio found outside??
The answer is apparently yes. Julio launches the ball into the truck and quickly drops the roll door. The ball is some kind of hard rubber, it bounces around the interior erratically like a pinball and Diego practically freaks out trying to catch it.
By the time you guys get home you have a migraine from laughing too much and Diego is asleep with his chin propped on the stupid ball.
If Diego was forced to complete some kind of fiber craft, what would he naturally gravitate to?
Do those gummy string bracelets you weave together count??
The first time they visit her parents' house Diego gets really excited because they have the same kind of tiny stringy art as Princess has in her apartment! And she has to explain to him like he's 10 that that is because her mom made them.
Princess's mom does cross stitch/needlework/sewing in general, and I can see him being very amused about using a stabby implement to make art. Also, it's incredibly intricate and fiddly, and somehow there's math?? So he watches her mom sew with fascination. And one day, he suddenly realizes what the mystery piece is meant to be and
