Prompt #24: Beam

Frey has said that Una’to doesn’t hide himself completely despite his many masks. Always his intention. Show enough to not seem disingenuous, to pull them in. Make them comfortable, and try to never show the sheep the wolf among them. Always after games and secrets for mutual black mail, should it ever be needed. Pretend nothing is wrong, always a smile. Sly, cunning, warm, sharp, playful, wry. So many to use, all tools to be used. Yet, the ever present challenge to not forget himself. An entertainers act, yet let the mask seem nearly seamless. Hide cruelty like a knife, but sharper smiles than any edge the blade could ever bite with. Avoid anything that can be picked up and used by others as a weapon against him and those he chooses to let in on the secret.

But with Frey, he would let the mask slip. Enough to beam at them, and let them be the one weakness he might have emotionally, and show it with reckless abandon. To melt into them with purrs and sighs. Odd confessions and promises between them with their odd flirts that could only suit the both of them. Like secrets only they will understand and share. Speaking like ghosts in coded poetics. Masks of another kind. Bitter-sweet feelings that melt in the mouth, but against others could serve the most potent poison when clever and conniving.

Even now as he reads over tomes, occupying his hands with weaving. Silver yarn now fading into black yarn, a scarf being knit as he mutters. A rare present to send their way. A silly skill for him to adopt, but something nice to send than just a stencil with Eorzean letters. A smile dancing on his lips as he goes. Something real. A real feeling giving form to a real thing. It’s enough to make him laugh at himself, but instead he keeps at his work.

An entertained hum vibrates from Una’to’s throat as he he smiles at Frey playfully, though crooked. “You’ve that smile again Frey,” he chides teasingly, “it’s only a recent reaction. My eyes got me into some trouble recently. Or perhaps it’s better to say they became the nail in the coffin that lead to the trouble escalating? Either way, it’s a reminder of that trouble for now”. His tail bounces in the air with the hat and mask he has to put on as she shrugs lightly.

“Thank you for the help dear. I hope in return my company is enough to help lift your spirits. If you need something more though, let me know. Especially if our heist isn’t enough”.

With a soft, calm smile Una’to fastens the mask to his face and places the hat on his head, fixing them up in the mirror quickly. Despite how garish the cape is, everything works to grab attention without pulling too many patterns and colors. “I think you might be right. Which is good since I’m to serve as your distraction. I’ll be just as I was when I was working with the Conntinental again. What an old mask,” he muses with a chuckle.

“Your effects are in the other room yet, yes?”

Una’to hums out studying Frey’s face fondly, but curiously. “And what is our happily ever after dearest Frey? I’m in full agreement of course, but I would like to imagine the picture you can paint. Or should it please you to act it out I should like to see it,” he offers with a smile. The curiosity of it makes it fun for him already, but offering to let Frey get into a character for it seemed like it would make it more fun and a little bittersweet if it was a completely idealized happily ever after.

“If you’d like I’ll even act with you, or offer you something in trade to know,” he purrs out. “Idealized in it’s entirety or founded out of the best we can have with how things are for us now. I’ll listen to either or both, which ever pleases you the most love. I just want to know what happily ever after you think we should have, even if it’s a far off sort of dream”.

Una’to’s grin deepens all the more. Everyone else accepted the game at face value. Easy rules and straight forward ones are always safer after all. “Well then, I suppose we have the misfortune today of delving into other mysteries that may get more personal hm?”. He leans forward just a little more his interest clearly piqued at this change to suit their current theme of guessing.

“I think I quite like this change to the game to be more difficult. Given your example starts with me asking, shall I emulate it as such?,” he asks, tapping his pointer finger on his exposed face. “If so I suppose my first question would be... where did you first come to after losing all your memories of who you once were?”. It seemed a safe enough question and starting there should give him some interesting options and set the tone for their game as far was what kind of answers three he should give and receive.

With a wry smile Una’to nods, “I suppose if that’s just the every day reality being afraid of it isn’t of much help. Not knowing something other than that makes it hard to imagine much anything else. I hadn’t considered that before”. He hums as he mulls over new perspective with a small smile. “In some ways. I have my brother again, though he’s much more feral than we were as kids and again, apt to run after me when I leave. And one other clan member who isn’t welcome back among their branch. I think you should meet them actually. They are well versed in magicks and might be able to help you with your Greenwrath”.

He squeezes Frey’s hand back reassuringly. “I’ll run as fast as I can. Hiding doesn’t work presently, but otherwise there have to be ways to hide from him. As it is right now since he’s had my blood he can find me wherever I am. It’s troublesome. I think I’ll try to break away regardless however. Better to run forever and never be found than to hide for a day and be caught,” he says with a smile. “I think I’ll need to hold onto those things to maintain the core of my personality, the things that never change. Thankfully I’ve been given quite the weapon for teeth,” he teases before continuing, “I think I should be able to dig them in far enough to retain most of myself”. He releases their hands before looking back up to the sky. Searching it for anymore light than there was before.

“I often find myself trying to get out of them as quickly as I can. Otherwise they fester like wounds. They take pieces from each other in most of the deals I’ve made. If it’s just helping one another where we can. Even if it just ended up beneficial to you only I think I would be fine with that”.

💗 I swear these questions aren't biased. (I'm lying)

I know they totally aren't biased by our idiot cat's antics and having a bet about Cor being the most likely to get a crush on Tak first in their weird friendship lol. Cor tries to keep his crushes as secret as possible. Since anything that feels like it could be exploited to hurt him is something that shouldn't be seen by others, because if it's seen, it can be used to hurt him.

I think it's hard to pin down what he's like with crushes that differs just from people he's very close to though. The actions can be the same or similar when it comes to things like affections, but the intensity differs. He's also much more sweet when he is in love with some one. Even just accidentally. He may not even realize it for a long while though. Because the emotional constipation stemming from trauma around abandonment issues and trust issues. The big thing though, is he will insist on spending more time with the person himself. Insisting he needs to imprint them in his memories because he never wants to forget them once they're gone. Asking for things that will make it so he can never forget them even when he's seeing the end of the world. That's one of his biggest tells for being in love or the start of a crush in a lower intensity delivery. I think. Cor's difficult with his bullshit sometimes.
