Poor Yuwu, not even your mother loves you...

Meatbun's author's note at the end of Remnants of Filth makes me so sad. She obviously is not happy with what she produced having wanted to write something other than what she ended up with, and yet...

I think Yuwu has some of her best writing ever. It seems she was pushed beyond her usual limits but in this I think she came up with some brilliance that not even 2ha contains. She has had to dig deep and it shows. It was possibly not the creative feat she wanted to achieve but it perhaps shows her natural ability off to its best.

I know if you are looking for her dub-con and non-con and explicitness this is not the book for you, but instead here you have more complexity of character (as she says, Gu Mang's relationship to Mo Xi is secondary to his mission for his people - this makes it stand out like a gem in the genre), her best depictions of grief, consideration of what it means to be family, thoughts of cycles of violence and harm and what it could take to break those. Her writing is beautiful and flowing throughout with none of the clunkiness of Case File Compendium and much more variety and moral greyness of characters than 2ha. And also Mo Xi, not a natural hero, not particularly anything special for a danmei character perhaps, and yet incredibly relatable and cathartic when he pushes to finally find the truth.

Please Meatbun, let yourself learn to love what you managed to achieve here. Case File Compendium may be what you wanted to write, but Yuwu truly shows the quality of author that you are.
