How did you learn to render skin? Ive been trying to learn but idk if I just don't have enough practice or if I haven't found a method that I like yet. But whenever I see your jayvik works i like the paint-y style that you have, especially around the eyes.
I think the main secret is the colors I choose. First of all, I don't do lineart. I just clean up my sketch. Under the sketch I usually create a fill layer that serves as the base skin color.
Then I start blurring my lines by painting in the shadows. Right away, I define the eye sockets, cheekbones, the area under the lower lip, and the nose with deep colors. I usually use a purple shade for this. Combined with a warm skin tone, it looks very natural.
I also pay a lot of attention to blush, making it fairly bright and peachy. I'm not afraid to give every character dark circles under their eyes, I think it adds a lot of charm. I also make the eyeliner quite bold on both the upper and lower eyelids.
If we're talking about Jayce, for example, in the first season he has a hint of stubble, so the entire lower half of his face has a subtle greenish tint. It's important to keep details like that in mind when choosing your colors. :)
I use a textured, semi-transparent brush because it makes it much easier to build up shadows gradually without overdoing them.
