Modern!Murtagh headcanons part 1

Definitely has a leather jacket. It was a gift from Tornac and it’s to the point where it’s a bit old and worn now, but somehow that makes it look cooler and he refuses to get rid of it. If it were to ever get too damaged to wear, he would immediately either repair it with magic or take it to the nearest person who could fix it (depending on where his skill level is).

I think we can all agree he listens to rock and metal (but if anyone is a Blue Stahli fan, I think he would also love him because the lyrics are so intelligently and well-written, especially given how he’s also a bit of a poet).

On that note, if his girlfriend was in any sort of band (especially rock/metal/alt music, but he’s supportive of all genres because he sees the discipline and skill required for it) he would 100% be her biggest fan. Especially if it had to do with her writing her own lyrics, because then they could bond over their love of poetry/lyrics and he would be so impressed by anything she wrote. Before they get together, that’s one of the things that attracts him to her the most and makes him think she’s so f-ing cool.

Extra determined to be a gentleman in the modern era, where there’s less societal pressure to be one like there is in the canon era. He despises “nice guys,” will proudly say he’s a feminist, and is very determined to keep chivalry alive.

I could see Modern!Murtagh being really into photography. He’s got so many pictures saved to his phone or camera of landscapes, Thorn, his friends/family, his partner, etc. that look like they were professionally done. But whenever someone tells him how professional they look, he always downplays it.

His aesthetic is kind of what I like to call “clean punk” – he’s rocking the leather jacket and combat boots, but always has a really nice shirt and jeans on underneath. This man looks phenomenal in a crisp, white button-down with the sleeves rolled up his forearms. Everything looks simple and comfortable, but fits him immaculately well, looks clean and like it was just ironed, and he always looks really put together. Especially with his hair, you can tell he makes a point to put effort into his appearance everyday. Although he does love a good hoodie and pair of sweats when he’s chilling at home alone or with his partner, when he takes his lady out, he’s making sure he looks just as nice and put together as she does.

And on that topic: hoodies. Once he discovers them, he’s obsessed. Although he goes for a more upscale style when he’s out and about, he’s changing back into the hoodie the second he gets back in his safe space alone and loves when his partner steals them.

Always carries at least a pocketknife with him in case he or someone else needs it—even if it’s just to open a package or cut a tag off something, he likes to be prepared at all times.

He’s mastered every way to order food without talking to an actual person, although of course he’s super polite to any service workers he does encounter and tips really well. If he can’t afford to tip, he decides he can’t afford to eat out.

His apartment/house aesthetic is cozy, but kind of messy with lots of warm, darker tones. Like lots of dark colored rooms/accent walls, warm toned furniture, some plants (fake, of course; gardening is Eragon’s area of expertise and he likes how they look, but not when they’re dead and attracting bugs), some cool art on the walls, little knick knacks he’s collected over the years on shelves, etc. It’s the kind of home that would be super cozy and perfect to sit in and just watch a thunderstorm through the window.

I could see him getting into some sort of stringed instrument, kind of hyper-fixating on learning about it for a while, but then when he’s halfway decent at it just sort of loses interest in it. Then he realizes he sort of liked the idea of being a musician more than actually being a musician. Sometimes he picks it back up to strum it when he’s bored, but doesn’t really ever sit back down and hone in on it anymore.

Eventually, after all the chaos of plot events has died down, Murtagh starts getting invited to the Garrowsons’ family dinners. Katrina and Roran cook delicious and healthy homemade meals once a week and invite Eragon as well as Murtagh, once they get to know him. Murtagh is a little hesitant at first, but eventually really comes to cherish them—and might’ve toppled Eragon’s Favorite Uncle status.

Murtagh Realizing You're Not Doing Well & Taking Care of You Headcanons

Murtagh is a very attentive, observant person and clocks that something is off with you immediately. Of course he worries, but also doesn’t want to pry or make you feel smothered, so just silently observes you for a while.

When it’s clear this is more than just a bad day, he starts keeping a more watchful eye on you, doing little things silently here and there to make your life easier. Any chores you were dreading are already done by the time you arrive, any items you need are suddenly waiting on your bed, little trinkets and your favorite foods are appearing here and there, etc.

He starts checking in with you to make sure you’re eating, drinking, and sleeping enough while gently reminding you that you’ve more than earned time to rest. If there are any tasks that are stressing you out, he offers to help or even take care of them for you with no hesitation.

Eventually, when things don’t improve and it’s clear you’re pushing yourself past your limits, he sits the two of you down and opens up about he felt after the battle in the throne room. How exhausted, angry, burned out, and completely drained both he and Thorn were and how it would’ve ended very badly for everyone involved if he didn’t take a break—all this to say, he doesn’t want to see you push yourself so hard that you lose yourself in the process and thinks a break might be a good idea, and why don’t you let him talk to Eragon about it on your behalf?

Eragon of course understands and tells you to take as much time as you need. You’re welcome to continue hanging around the academy without worrying about tasks or to take a trip elsewhere. If you feel you need to get away, Murtagh offers to show you all the cool places he found in his travels with Thorn.

If you opt to stay around the academy, Murtagh says his out of the way cottage is open to you whenever, and he even makes sure his spare bedroom is always prepared if you’re not together yet (or if your relationship is still new). If you are, of course you’re welcome in his room. He gets you all the things you need to relax, saying his book collection is all open to you, and takes care of everything—including cooking you meals that have all the nutrients you need to heal and loves making you tea.

If you need some time away and agree to accompany Murtagh and Thorn on a trip, he’s ecstatic to show you all his favorite places he found. He somehow even makes camping out in the open by the fire relaxing and secretly enjoys having you all to himself.

He seeks Eragon’s help out in learning meditation strategies, breathing techniques, and ways to cope and heal that he learned from the elves. As he’s teaching them to you, it inspires him to take better care of himself as well and it becomes a tradition for the two of you to do many of these things together.

He’s constantly bringing you little gifts, such as flowers he found in a field, your favorite snacks, or even hand-making you little wooden carvings. If he really wants to impress you, he acquires the elves’ help to learn how to make jewelry. The designs are always simple, but you can feel the love and care he put into them and never take them off.

Of course, night flights on Thorn with him are a must (or flying together on your own dragon, if you’re a Rider), usually followed by landing in an out of the way, remote location to just chat, stargaze (he loves astronomy and is pointing out all the constellations to you), snuggle, etc.

He becomes a bit more touchy feely during this time, regardless of where you are in your relationship. If you’re not together yet, they’re very shy, gentle touches to your arm, back, hand, etc. here and there. If it’s early, the touches are a little more frequent and he’s not as afraid to do things like smooth your hair, kiss your knuckles, or pull you into a hug. If you’ve been together for a while, he’s practically attached to you at all times, holding your hand, holding you against him, all the random kisses, lifting you off the ground when he hugs you, etc.

He’ll do whatever it takes to make you feel better, is constantly trying to make you laugh and smile, and always reminding you about how much better his life is with you in it.

So I know we’ve established Murtagh would need a long time of friendship and building trust before he considered pursuing someone romantically (I headcanon about 4-5 years personally). But how long does everyone think he would take after getting together for the first “I love you”? Knowing him and the amount of time he’d wait, I think he’d know he was in love with this person by the time they get together, but how long until he actually says it? Does he wait for her to say it first? Does he get teary eyed? Does he have trouble getting it out? Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts.

Eragon and Murtagh are in Carvahall visiting the Stronghammers. They are talking to little Ismira (4-5). Murtagh and Roran both have beards at the point, but Eragon doesn’t. Based on her understanding, Ismira confidently says that Eragon isn’t full grown because he doesn’t have a beard. Murtagh bursts out laughing (maybe choked on his drink a bit). Roran laughs too. Eragon chuckles. Murtagh IS NOT going to let Eragon forget this!

Lmaooooo yes, I love it. Roran and Murtagh bond over this and always tease him about it, too.
