MUSE CONCERT STAGES :: DRONES WORLD TOUR (2015-2016)
Revisiting Drones 10 years later and the the dangers of computerised military weapons being more pressing than ever really get me. Matt talked in interviews about dehumanisation, people "losing their humanity" because their targets appear on computer screens and don't seem real. Putting that together with how many IDF cowards seem to treat human destruction as a game: immature idiots laughing and plotting deaths like life was a video game, or the people in it new inconveniences rather than people with full lives. Perhaps Matt overestimated how much empathy and humanity they had in the first place, to be honest. But it's an interesting album to revisit at this time, when AI is being finetuned on the regular, and companies like Microsoft have their services being sold to developing artificial intelligence meant to lock onto targets with more accuracy than ever before. It's what he spoke about 10 years ago on Reapers.
And now here we are. Will enough people break out of the brainwashing, of what they've been taught? Whether in compulsory military service, voluntary zealous psychopathy and ethnonationalism or propaganda? Every day the chorus of voices speaking out for Palestine grows louder. Every day, more and more people are educating themselves and turning their backs on lies they've been taught when they realities around them do not match what they've been told. Solidarity, revolt. I hope it's not only the cautionary tale part of the album that has come alive again.
