Curved edges of the roof tiles press into her back - the discomfort ignored as a darkened sky splashed with stars has it’s audience of one captivated. The home she used to find comfort in is now riddled with signs of crumbling apart over the years. Fingertips lazily brush over the roughness of the tiles only to raise her hand and examine the surface. Weary eyes search for any reminders of what she’s done to accomplish her goals.
Ones that she couldn’t be proud of or ever feel satisfied from.
Would it ever be enough...
Bringing her hand down, she lays it over the burgundy jewel embedded and centered below the clavicle. This would be the only reminder she needed as she lets herself relax and shut her eyes to rest even for a moment.
Sing song chirps from birds accompanied by a cool breeze amongst the warm weather stirs the witch from slumber. Blades of grass brushing against skin and she lays still, taking in the scenery.
Distant laughter nearing has the woman pushing herself up to sit, peeking over her shoulder to confirm she isn't alone.
Two children bounding across the field of grass and flowers that occupy it.
Their laughs are happy and hands are held together as the older of the two leads with a grin.
Searching for butterflies. That's what she recalled.
He would boast about everything he knew of - parroting their dearest father. She would listen so intently, as if the recited trivia was like learning a new spell.
They'd stand like statues - as still as can be - waiting for the winged insects to get near or even land on them.
She pulls her legs up, hugging them close and watches the children of an old memory become a blur in the distance ahead.
Nails dig into skin and she hides her face against her knees.
She won't spend anymore tears on him. Not over how things used to be.
It was becoming much too difficult though.
"It's enough isn't it?" A hand resting on her shoulder with a question she's mulled over like a broken record wakes her from the dream.
Face stained from tears and welcomed back by an unchanged night.
Who could that have been?
She'd be lying if she acted oblivious to the only option...
"I don't know. Let me think about it a little more...and I'll be honest with you." she speaks to no one.
Alone on the roof with the moonlight above once more.
