The only real constant in Riley’s life was Harvey. They’d met when she was just 6 years old, instantly connecting. When she ran away at 11 from her abusive aunt and her boyfriend, the truth of it was, leaving him behind was the hardest part. She had to though, unable to take another moment of it. It was a year before she was reunited with her siblings, unaware they were trying to find her. She’d been in the hospital after her boyfriend, at the time, tried to kill her in a jealous drug induced rage. Though the transition was hard, the part that helped was ending up connecting with Lucas again. The pair didn’t cross that line into more until Riley was 17 and clean for the second time. Savannah, her daughter, was 3 years old, and Riley really wanted to do right by her.
As it was, though, she relapsed and over the years, she and Harvey couldn’t seem to hold it all together. They kept getting together and breaking up, yet never really wanting to be apart. It was hard because seeing him with anyone else drove her crazy and made her insanely jealous – even worse when he got some chick pregnant. But she knew the reverse was true, too, sometimes purposefully using that to rile him up. If they could just manage to figure things out – but it was hard to say if they’d get there. Riley’s older sister, Cat, was really their biggest fan, always so certain the two would end up together. Each time they broke up, she had no issue telling both of them they were being stupid.
Though Riley could likely afford to live on her own now, at 26 (Savannah being 12), she didn’t want that. She knew it wasn’t the best thing, either. She was still new enough to being clean that she didn’t fully trust herself fully on her own. It’s what had her and Harvey sharing a home – besides, the last thing she wanted was to keep their daughters, Savannah and Harley, separated as they adored each other, always referring to one another as sisters. The past few days had been a struggle. Work was busy, stressful – with her regular job as well as some recording in the studio. That night had been rough, drugs right there available to her as that wasn’t exactly uncommon in the industry. She was supposed to be home by 11 pm at the latest. That wasn’t the case. The minutes and hours ticked by and all she wanted was to get insanely high. She bought some ecstasy which was one of her favorites, the memory of how good it felt nearly pooled into her bones. If she could just get home without taking it. It was a little after 1 am when she finally pulled up. She nearly bolted from the car to the door, shaky hands working the lock. If Harvey wasn’t awake, would she have the strength to wake him? Walking inside, she locked the door, keys set on the nearby table as she spotted him. She barely took but a few steps towards him, “I –,” her words faltered, not sure what to say for a few moments. Instead, she took the drugs from her purse, tabs of X, and handed them to him, “Take them from me before I…” she waved a hand off as if it wasn’t necessary to finish the sentence.
