Jade was committed- not just to Saphir- but the idea. A few days after their talk, Jade ‘revealed’ to the Emperor that he and Saphir had been dating, and then began his attempts to pretend that was their reality. Jade started bringing Saphir food directly to the lab, actually listened to him. When nobody was around! Jade would touch him, too, but that was nothing new.

One particular evening stood out, so Jade waltzed his way in, sat on Saphir’s table, and stared with frightening intensity. When Saphir noticed him, Jade handed over more of his work he’d done on their secret project.

“I don’t think there’s much more theory to do before testing it. I suppose that means we’ll have our child soon.” He smiled, but it was a smile weakened by something else on his mind. “The Emperor asked me to escort you to the palace. He refused to tell me why. I’m sure it’s nothing, even if he did find out, we can tell him the truth.”

“How dare you... I know love better than Jade. Considering how you insist on being with him despite knowing his problems, I can only assume you have an ulterior motive. What are you hoping to gain from your status as nobility, I wonder? Whatever it is, it’s not worth it.”

He pauses to consider something for a moment.

“And if by Lorelei’s will you really do love someone who can never return it, than I wish you the best of luck. I truly cannot comprehend that kind of dedication from someone he’s known for less than a year, but I suppose stranger things have happened.”

And finally, finally, finally after getting around all that awkward flirting she wasn’t even sure was flirting, after showing her interest and being patient and gentle and understanding, apparently Balan really was interested in her as well.  And he was smart and attractive and she enjoyed spending time with him, and she was enormously happy when he’d asked her out for a drink.  Maybe they’d finally start something.

He’d ordered their drinks before she arrived, and it was rather pleasant to have them waiting for her, particularly off a long day of travel and work as she was.

“I’m honestly having a hard time believing you were so clever only moments after having your life threatened by a mad spirit and King Gaius both.”

She was always glad to hear more details of the world’s most recent legend, but mainly she wanted to learn more about Balan himself.

Throughout the whole day, Jude felt that someone was... Watching him. As usual, he woke up, made breakfast for himself and Elle, got Elle to school, and went to work, but there was a presence of sorts that loomed over him as he went about his day. The research wasn’t sure if he should be threatened or not. Surely, this wasn’t something to overreact to...

Once he left the lab, Jude proceeded to make his way towards Leia’s apartment in Trigleph. He was grateful that Leia was able to pick Elle up after school, the meeting today was just too important to suddenly pass up. Fiddling with his GHS, he stopped in his tracks suddenly. It was the presence again, he could sense it staring at him from afar. What in the world was it?...
