You see your child playing in the backyard, holding a stick as a wand and waving it around to cast spells. Sliding open the glass door you ask them what spell they’re casting. They reply it’s a spell of safety they’ve learned today. You laugh, thinking nothing of it.
Days go by and each day they’re playing in the backyard casting spells, always a new one that focuses of longevity and good will. You grow anxious as the spells no longer sound as the usual gibberish you expect to here from this type of make-believe.
No.
It sounds like a memory long forgotten.
The next day you ask your child who has been teaching them these spells. They reply that the grandma in the woods has been. They explain that they meet the grandma one day when they were trying to catch butterflies but they tripped over a log and got hurt. The grandma appeared beside them and healed them. You get shivers all over your body, but you don’t know why. You ask your child if they’ve meet the grandma since then. Answering yes, they’ve seen her everyday and teaches them a new spell.
“Can I come with you next time?”
Your child’s response is a simple nod and sweet smile.
The next day your child leads you into the woods behind your backyard, holding your hand telling you not to let go or you won’t be able to find it. Walking deeper and deeper into the woods, the sight of normalcy which you once knew is gone replaced with the sight of your young child leading you somewhere that doesn’t feel real.
That doesn’t feel new.
You’ve walked this way before, you know the path of which you are taking. But you can’t remember why. Why did you know those were not made up spells? Why did you know someone taught them this instead of them looking it up online? Why did the story of the grandma sound so familiar to you, except for you it was when you lost your way home and had gotten scared of a big dog and tripped over a rock.
Your child has lead you to a clearing with a small cabin in the middle, with a luscious garden to the side and vines growing up the side of the cabin and onto the chimney that’s letting out a steady stream of smoke. From inside the cabin you see an old woman waving her hands around just like your child and you have done before. The old woman looks up and notices you and your child. She moves out of sight and the font door swings open revealing the old woman with a smile.
“Well come in, I have lunch made and afterwards we can have another lesson.”
Your child bolts forward still holding your hand. She lets go as soon as she makes it past the door, racing to sit on an elegant wooden chair at a table decorated with different types of flowers and a plate of cookies. You stand at the edge of the opening, unsure of going in. The grandma put a hand on your shoulder.
“It has been a long time,” she guides you into the cabin.
“I’m glad you’re back.”

I wonder if any of my friends think about me as much as I think about them
I remember reading a book back in junior high and it had this poetic style to it and it was about this girl who had to live with her actor dad and at the end you find out her dad is dating this guy named Ripley, and I only remember it because they used the line "Ripley, believe it or not" to reveal the boyfriend I really want to read that book again
