LINCOLN THEATER

Originally from Kazakhstan but now living in the Czech Republic, Dmitrij Proskin aka Chemis, first laid eyes on a graffiti magazine at age 16. He says his neighborhood was not happy with his new hobby but he was soon painting bigger and better work. Chemis started with classic lettering, stencil, and stickers—“just the usual night stuff” he told Street Art United States—but he was driven to paint larger and more meaningful work so soon moved to doing permissioned work and experimenting with photorealism and anamorphic 3D techniques. In 2013, for Baton Rouge’s Museum of Public Art, he collaborated with Pose 2 painting the side of the derelict but historically significant Lincoln Theater at 13th and Myrtle Walk Streets, and his lettering in this small exit alcove is a fascinating example of his precise anamorphic work.  @chemisgraffiti  @museumofpublicart

“MIMI OF BATON ROUGE”

Opening its doors in 1949, the Lincoln Theater at Myrtle and Eddie Robinson Drive in Baton Rouge was one of just three major theaters the African American’s could attend. “For 75 cents”, Peggy Bates with the Louisiana Black History Hall of Fame told WAFB, the black-owned business provided “hope in a time where hope was hard to come by.” Closed in the mid-80s, the theater once again tried to make a go of it between 2000 and 2007. In 2014, in the midst of renewed efforts to rehabilitate the theater, Australian artist Rone made a stop in his U.S. roadtrip to paint this wall. Describing his work as the friction point between beauty and decay seems a particularly poignant description for this lovely portrait of Mimi, a girl living just two doors away from the boarded up property.  @r_o_n_e  @museumofpublicart

Hunto

Born in Brindisi in Southern Italy but now living in London, Hunto told GraffitiStreet that he discovered his passion for art at a very early age. Looking at this colorful 2014 wall for the Museum of Public Art project in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, it comes as no great surprise that his work combines his inspiration by Pablo Picasso—the subject he says of the only book he had in his house—with what he calls the “magnetic attraction of the graffiti scene.” Hunto started tagging at around age 15 but within a couple of years his graffiti started to evolve and as his work began to include faces he wanted simplified characters he could quickly paint in the dark. Not comfortable talking about art or trying to define his style he told GraffitiStreet he paints quickly in freestyle “and what happens to come out i’m happy with.”  @huntoland  @graffitistreet  @museumofpublicart  @scenesfromthesidewalk

Tats Cru

Pose2, NYC graffiti writer and advocate for graffiti as an art form tells of Kevin Harris coming to New York in 2012 and asking subway art legend, James Top, to be his guide to the heart and soul of NYC spray paint culture. As Harris developed a deep appreciation and respect for the art a bond was formed. When James suggested that several NYC artists go to Baton Rouge to paint a wall a transformation began in Old South Baton Rouge. Kevin started the Museum of Public Art project at the corner of Myrtle and Eddie Robinson out of a belief that pubic art is a force for positive community development, “instilling a sense of hope, and history, through creative expression which unfortunately in many inner city communities, is stymied and stifled.” This 2012 wall was painted by the famed NYC Tats Cru who bill themselves as the Graffiti Kings and given the list of artists that have come through the crew and the amount of coverage they get from the likes of the NY Times, who’s to argue? @tatscru @pose2ismaxxmoses777 @museumofpublicart
