Games I played in 2018.

After I put together a little write-up for games I played in 2019, I started thinking about similar lists for previous years, so after another quick peek at my Backloggery archive, I made this as a little bonus.

This one’s a bit shorter, and no long write-up this time. 2018 still had some memorable experiences, though, whether puzzle games like Opus Magnum, compelling narratives like Owlboy or Pyre, or old classics like S3&K.

Chapter 2 Boss — Mushroom 11

Much like Pikmin, Mushroom 11 (with art by Simon Kono) aims to depict a post-human Earth full of weird and sometimes absurd creatures. Much of the wildlife in this game is bristly, dirty, squishy, or translucent in a way that is common among small creatures in real life, but would probably be considered ‘gross’ by most people. This game’s world is like a parody of the mossy, grubby world that exists inside a rotting log, but blown up to human scale and draped over the remnants of human civilization. It’s a very matter-of-fact game that doesn’t try to portray any creatures in terms of ‘good’ or ‘evil’. Everything just does what it needs to do. This boss is just hanging out in its nest. The player controls some kind of fungal colony trying to get past it.

Mushroom 11 is essentially a physics-based platformer (described by the devs as an ‘anti-platformer’), which challenges the player to move a green fungal mass around by directing its growth. The second boss is a big spider-like beast full of eyeballs (or eyeball-like orbs), perched on an old, decaying playground swing. These eyeballs can be extended through either the top or the bottom of the creature, and the player must touch them to defeat the boss. In this battle, the boss’ legs act as the primarily obstacle to the player. However, they can also be helpful, as the only easy way to get on top of the boss is by launching off the far end of the see-saw when it kicks at the side nearer to it.

Many affordances are made to the player in Mushroom 11 in order to ensure that they can intuitively navigate the environment and solve puzzles by erasing sections of their fungal form without destroying themselves in the process. As such, even if the player is erasing very quickly, new fungus will grow into existence as long as it is note afflicted in some way. In addition, because pieces can be broken off from the main body, the game will continue growing between each separate piece as other fungal cells are erased, until one or the other is more erased overall.

Mushroom 11: Bet you don’t own a pen tablet

Which is a goddamn shame.  However, it’s still fucking fantastic with a mouse. I am pretty sure though I can’t convey how awesome it is to perform fungal acrobatics and fight plant monsters with art tools.

Essentially... you are...the hand of a fungal god? Who knows. But its your job to trim this bush of matter and use physics to defeat 7 levels of puzzles and coordination tests. There’s the spores of a plot (hyuk hyuk) sprinkled throughout the background art - it’s clearly post-apocalyptic, but I’ll let you make the rest of your conclusions on your own. This game wants you to work it out, damn you!

In addition, literally everything is astoundingly beautiful and I am looking up the artist of the background music in another tab atm.  If that’s not enough to convince you, there are definitely some weird squidgy moist uncomfortable feels when you’re jamming your pulpy sponge through the tubes.

For long we have been waiting for the Mushroom 11 to hit the smartphone screens. The game is no doubt perfect for the touch screens. Now, the game is ready to be released on 9 March 2017 on iOS.

Last year at PAX Prime (now PAX West as the convention has expanded into multiple significant shows), I played Mushroom 11, a sort of physics-based platformer where you add and substract from a fungal mass to help navigate it through the world.
