Schubert is the final problem in interpretation — to get to a point of maturity and depth where you can bring together the different elements in his music. These are in first place; his dramatic power — Beethoven was his idol. And then his folklore simplicity. And then his Viennese background. And his proximity to death, especially in the last sonatas. To bring all this to a synthesis is very difficult, especially for a young person. In Schubert I don't think you can even mention vanity or ego — it would be completely out of place.
