Maybe not many even in Italy know that Little Tony, born as Antonio Ciacci in Tivoli (Rome), who lived throughout his life in Rome, never acquired Italian citizenship: like his parents and ancestors before him he was from San Marino, an independent small state in the heart of Italy, between the regions of Marche and Emlia-Romagna the land of liscio-the traditional folk music which kind of influenced some of his ballads. A big fan of Elvis Presley, Tony loved to wear his same famous hair style and was inspired by his stage presence. Between 1959 and 1961 Tony performed with his brothers in a rock and roll band in public venues in England. He also recorded some classic pieces which reached UK Top 20. Somebody believes that it was his version of Hippy Hippy Shake that Paul McCartney heard on the radio. Personally I favour his I got Stung and Baby I don’t Care . Back in Italy he was soon called/named after his hit Il Ragazzo col Ciuffo ( The Guy with the Ducktail haircut), and Cuore Matto ( Crazy Heart) a beat song which is his hugest success. Quando Vedrai la mia Ragazza was number 2 at the Sanremo Festival of 1964; Riderà, adapted from the original French song Fais-La-Rire, evergreens such as La Spada nel Cuore and La Donna di Picche, Prega Prega a favourite of mine, liscio-like ballads as La Fine d’Agosto and Stasera mi Pento , Lacrime, Mulino a Vento and many others according to one’s own taste. Little Tony is still dearly loved all over the world.

The musicarelli were musical comedies starring pop idols who performed their latest hits through a romantic plot. Rewatching Little Tony’s films at the end of this summer, I was struck by some originality in them : some catching frames and backgrounds while Tony’s singing; some of the best comedians such as Raimondo Vianello,Ferruccio Amendola, Oreste Lionello, Renzo Montagnani, Lucio Flauto to name a few; some very good lines and classic situations tasting much of commedia all’italiana; co-starring pretty ladies and good actresses such as Virna Lisi, Eleonora Brown, Silvia Dionisio, Marisa Solinas, Isabella Savona and Sheyla Rosin; quality directors such as Bruno Corbucci, brother of one Sergio of spaghetti western connections. Finally some pleasant toughtless entertainment combined with nostalgia for a happier lost Italy.
