I remember the very first time I met Phil Asher, I will never ever forget!!!
Back in 2006 we arranged to meet up at his house in west London, so I took the bus, I got totally lost, I jumped from one bus to another, I was sooo ridiculously late. He then rang me ‘where are you?’ I had to describe to him where I was, I felt like a right div. He said ‘ look out for a white van, we are coming to pick you up’
All sorts of things were going through my head hahaha. He finally arrived with his friend Jose, who was driving, poor Phil had both of his hands in casts that explained why his friend had to drive. Finally Jose dropped us to Phil’s house, after aaall that..... I realised it was only a 20 min drive from my house 🤣 🤣 I didn't say anything and styled it out.
That day he introduced me to his lovely Asher family. We sat in his studio room, the incense burning and we talked about music, we listened to some tunes, he played some beats he made, we even made some tunes, it was such a warm welcome, it was special, that day I left that house with such a good feeling inside, that will forever stay with me.....
Every other week we worked on music, I would sometimes take my guitar, we made quite a few tunes together, spanning from all genres. He taught me a lot about music production and it was so lovely to see how he made his music using his MPC 3000 & Maschine, I would just sit for hours looking at what he was doing, cutting samples, going through kicks and snares. I would show him my beats and he gave me feedback and ideas. He gave me lots of music to listen to and would burn multiple CDs for me, damn his record collection was huge. Phil really inspired me and encouraged me so much, he said ‘believe in your self more’... but I didn’t see it and over time my anxiety got the better of me.
I feel immensely lucky to have worked with Phil, met so many lovely people through him too, still connecting with lovely people. We made some great tunes!!! He was kind, genuine, humble, ridiculously talented, also a bit of a joker and a great teacher...left us with wonderful memories and music that will live forever
