I wanted to share some wonderful advice our 354 Type II class taught by Liz Charman, received this last Thursday from a visit from:
Must Be Something Studio http://www.mustbesomethingstudio.com/
"Must Be Something is a full-service advertising agency in Portland, Oregon. Our philosophy is simple: Know who you are. Tell the truth. Make it interesting. So, bring us your challenges and we'll bring you solutions."
The talk was so inspiring and these two guys just motivated me so much to continue being the best that I can be! I thought a lot of what they said was very valuable advice to any designer! Here are some of my favorite words of wisdom by Jed and Andrew.
-PUT SOMETHING OF YOURSELF INTO ALL OF YOUR WORK
My takeaway from these words of wisdom was that to make your designs connect to you, put your touch into everything you do. This in the end will make your work more original and make you happier!
- DON'T FALL IN LOVE TOO QUICKLY
Be ready to throw things away and start all over again! Don't fall in love with your first idea, because you may get your heart broken. Keep an open mind and be ready to start from scratch and get rid of other ideas.
-IF YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT IT, NOBODY ELSE WILL
If you don't care about what you are doing, it will show in your work..and then whoever you are designing for will see that and they wont care either! Do work you are passionate about!
-YOU GET THE CLIENTS YOU DESERVE
My takeaway from this advice was that if you are hardworking, passionate, and care about what you do..you will get the clients you deserve! If you don't put much effort into something, you will get clients that don't really care to put much effort in either.
-BE HUMBLE, NOT ARROGANT
If someday you turn into a big shot designer, stay humble. Don't feel entitled to think you are better than everyone else, other designers, or even your client! Treat everyone with respect and everyone will end up respecting you.
-CLIENTS ALWAYS WIN!
Even if your client has bad taste, and you disagree with them completely. Its ultimately their decision, they are the ones paying you after all! Give them what they ask for, give them a little something more. Suggest your ideas, but don't tell them their ideas suck (even if you think they do).
IT'S A SMALL WORLD, BE KIND TO EVERYONE.
The world may be large, but when it really comes down to it..it is very small. Especially with all this social media and networking! If you are mean to people, others will hear about it..then no one will want to be your friend. KINDNESS takes you far! Be kind to everyone no matter how big or small. :)
Well, there are some important words of wisdom here! Take them how you'd like them. Oh and check out Must Be Something Studio! They are AWESOME!
