Queen Maria Vittoria of Spain’s Pearl Tiara to Be Auctioned
A pearl and diamond tiara that belonged to Queen Maria Vittoria of Spain will be sold at Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels auction on May 11th in Geneva. The estimate is 940,000-1,400,000 CHF/ 998,452-1,487,056 USD. Maria Vittoria was married to the first Duke of Aosta, a son of King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy who became the King of Spain from 1870-1873 after Queen Isabel II was deposed.
The tiara was made by Musy around the time of her wedding in 1867 and can be worn as a necklace. The pearls could possibly be interchanged with emeralds. King Umberto II of Italy later bought the tiara from one of Maria Vittoria’s sons to prevent it from leaving the family and it was passed down to his daughter, Princess Maria Gabriella of Savoy.
