For once, he’d overheard this conversation almost completely by accident. Courteous as it had been for his former first mate and perpetual thorn in his side to ALIGN himself with their interests after initially offering his services to Salazar in finding him, Jack knew better than trust in Hector Barbossa’s ever switching loyalty. Just as he had the last time they’d occupied the same ship together, Jack had kept a sharp eye on him, waiting for the moment when his PARANOIA would be proved right ( he’d wanted to prepare, but this crew wasn’t his. should the man turn against him once more, he had few bargaining chips ). And fortunately enough, as he lingered by the entrance to the captain’s cabin of his newly restored ship, underneath the helm, he’d stumbled upon a GEM.
At least, that's what he thought. The spat between Barbossa and Carina was rather unremarkable in itself, but some instinct deep in his gut had already made a connection. As Jack slowly strolled out onto the main deck, catching the way in which the older man had stopped still, gaze seemingly fixed on a small object -- was that his COMPASS? -- in his hand, that feeling only grew in strength.
It had been easy to approach him unnoticed. The temptation to SNATCH the trinket from his grasp was all too present ( particularly as he remembered, with mingled shame and disdain, how he’d lost it in the first place ), but any urge quickly disappeared when he noticed the direction in which the needle was pointing.
‟ She is far too young for you, Hector, and you know it. ” The feigned OUTRAGE in his voice deftly concealed the satisfaction lingering beneath, but his eyes still gave him away. Jack confidently stepped forward, looking, for all intents and purposes, like the cat who got the cream. ‟ And in possession of a rather curious last name. Well, curious in that it’s not curious at all. Unassuming, in fact. ”
His gaze strayed deliberately back up to the helm of the Black Pearl, where Carina now stood, holding tightly onto that damnable diary of hers -- an object as irritating as it was likely to save them all. There was a RESEMBLANCE, for sure -- from what he could remember, at least. ‟ Didn’t you used to... like women with unassuming last names? One in particular comes to mind from a long time ago. Twenty years ago, perhaps? ”
