It seems people have decided vocabulary centered around speech problems and the like should be specified to a ridiculous degree as to avoid being lumped in with other speech problems. Watching so many argue semantic and limiting the language someone can use when they already are struggling with communication at all seems like a new level of heartless, not even accounting for the confusion all this bickering creates. You all trying to split hairs on what means what, creating new terms to fill niches no one needed up until now, worsens the very problem you all sought to fix.
Ironically, no matter what words you use, ignorant assholes will still assume whatever they want regardless of how much you separate yourself from other communication issues. They don't know the difference between nonspeaking, nonverbal, mute, or any other variations of the like and from the looks of it, neither do the very people demanding exclusivity! Someone already struggling to communicate with others shouldn't have to fear being swarmed by others for using the wrong term.
The idea that distancing from those who sometimes can talk will stop outsiders from expecting or demanding speech from those who can't is entirely false. If you feel people with similar but different speech issues is silencing your voice or talking over you and your solution is to silence theirs, you've decided to fight the wrong enemy. Because I promise you, those same people who see our existence as nothing more than an inconvenience don't care whether you used "lose speech" or "nonverbal" and taking it out on someone else won't change that.
