Mutterkorn (mother grain) Claviceps purpurea
Extremely toxic fungus that looks like a black, curled grain. Causes hallucinations, necrosis in fingers and toes, respiratory and circulatory problems up to death. As it used to be hard to seperate these from regular grain, these diseases, called St. Anthony fire were quite common. It was also used in the discovery and first synthesis of LSD. The hallucinogenic effects were used in rituals by Germanic tribesmen as well as Ancient Greeks.
