Chapter 15/16 Excerpt:
Rey gets the call a month later, and her heart drops out of her chest. Leia’s voice sounded a world away against the rush in her ears, and she nearly collapsed onto the floor with the weight of it all.
“How are things going with you and Ben?” Leia had asked, and Rey didn’t know how to respond, she just scrunched her brow and listened as static filled the dead air between them. “He told me not to call, to give you two time to settle back into things, but oh, it’s been a whole month and I couldn’t wait any longer.”
It was the second half that did it, that struck her right through her middle. When she could finally find the strength to speak, her voice was still weak and shaky as she clutched her phone to her ear, “he’s out?”
“Oh honey,” Leia’s voice was suddenly sad on the other end of the line, all of the bubbling excitement drained out in an instant, “did he not tell you?”
Her voice reminded Rey too much of what it had been like when she was found by social-services for the first time. It was so similar that it was almost as if she was there again, legs swinging in a too-tall chair, looking across a big desk at a lady with a teary-looking smile. Oh honey, she had said, how long have you been alone?
Start from the beginning?
