Return, post-explosion stuff
I don't really know what to say, I checked out except for the queue after a stressful day last week. I work in an electronic transport lab. The lab adjoining mine handles metal etching, and had a large container of nitric acid explode. Originally I thought the bang was a falling metal cabinet and went running in thinking of helping whomever it fell on (there was a person yelling for help), to find one undergrad covered in the stuff, and another bleeding profusely from his nose and facial lacerations. Then followed roughly 15 minutes of sheer hell as the other people working in the lab panicked, ran in and out of the area spectating, etc. Nobody went for the neutralizer or took their phones out, so I called it in, tried to help the injured and organize the evacuation as best I could. At first I thought I smelled fire but was told by medical staff that it was just my sinus lining etching from the inhalation. Both of the students were hospitalized but have now been released, my voice has returned, and my blisters are gone. It seems like not much will change, which is frustrating, there will likely be a fall guy who definitely could have been better prepared but the accident was not of her making, and I can't use my lab until after next week thanks to the water damage from the chem showers that don't have drains. It could have been so much worse: that was the HF hood and if any had spilled...well. We're lucky it didn't. So, that's been my week. Paperwork and sounding like Patrick Warburton in the mornings and worker's comp interviews and EHS investigators.
