Project Thankful

Hey guys! So for every Thursday for the next year I will be posting 3 things and 2 people who I am thankful for. I'm trying to make myself and others more aware of the things and people were blessed to have in our life. So if you want to participate in this movement, you can message me what you're thankful for. It could be anything, a sister or a TV show, McDonald's fries, your laptop, whatever. I want to know what you're thankful for. I will be writing these things done on index cards and taping them to the wall in my room so I can see and know just what everyone else is thankful for. A Very Unprofessional Cup of Tea

So, today on the hotline I volunteer for, a caller mentioned that it was too bad we couldn't grab tea sometime (because it would be unprofessional). And the truth is that I agreed with her. There is definitely a place and a need for an anonymous hotline. Anonymity allows many people to feel more comfortable/safe discussing their experiences with trauma than they otherwise might. Anonymity creates a sort of shield. But a shield is ultimately a barrier. It is great when a barrier is what you want (for instance when you need protection), but it also gets in the way of forming connections. (Hugging across a shield is just awkward...) Rules that require "providers" to keep a professional distance from "clients," reinforce the provider-client dichotomy—with all its problematic power differentials. This leaves little room for the development of leadership among survivors, who are continually resigned to the category of "client". It seems counterintuitive that a movement supposedly based on principles of "empowerment" would systematically adopt policies that enact a discourse that creates such rigid distinctions between those who help others and those who are helped by others. While there is value in the shield of anonymity, there is power in community—both the power to heal and the power to effect change. I want my movement to deploy anonymity intentionally and strategically. There is no reason why an antiviolence organization (especially a large, established, well-resourced) can't have both an anonymous crisis line AND systematically work to build communities that involve survivors and allies as valued members. Communities based on the idea that we ALL bring valuable skills and experiences to our work. (For some the skills are gained through professional trainings and for others they are gained through personal experiences. For most of us it's a combination of the two.) Communities that work to develop the leadership of all of their members. Communities that allow (and even encourage) each of us to take care of ourselves and each other while doing the work that each of us is most capable of doing. In other words, communities that aren't based on asymmetrical dichotomies (provider/client, giver/receiver, healer/patient, professional/layperson, etc.), but rather are formed around shared goals, visions, and strategies that value diverse experiences and skills.
