I'm an educator and a community organizer whose work focuses on gender-based violence, structural inequality, and prisons. I'm a comic book reading, video game playing, tabletop rpg loving dork. The morning after the Pulse shooting I made this Facebook post and it ended up being shared by over 2,000 people over the course of the past couple days. This morning I wake up and see this. Facebook literally removed my post because it’s apparently offensive or inappropriate in some way. Read my post and tell me where I’m being offensive? Apparently queer and trans people aren’t allowed to be angry about tragedies that happen within our community and we’re not allowed to encourage straight people to hold themselves accountable in any regard. This is fucking disgusting.

UPDATE: a handful of people had assumed that my initial post was deleted because of some kind of filter or algorithm that detected the word “faggot” and automatically deleted it. Turns out that wasn’t the case, because after I posted the above screenshot on Facebook, it was shared by a few hundred people and then got deleted again. And this time, Facebook decided to ban me temporarily. I can’t post, comment, or like anything for 24 hours and I can’t message anyone on Facebook for 72 hours. It’s clear that Facebook actively wants to silence queer and trans voices on this subject. They don’t care about us.

What you need to know about Obama’s new letter of guidance for transgender students.

the administration has determined that the designation of “sex” in Title IX protections also includes gender identity, which means that if public schools don’t comply with these protections, they lose federal funding

transgender students are only required to have their parent or guardian contact the school district to notify them that their identity differs from what is previously on record

these students do not need to provide a medical diagnosis, identification documents, or any other information regarding their transition

transgender students must be accommodated even when it makes others students uncomfortable

transgender students can be offered the use of single stall restrooms, but if other students are not required to use them, then they aren’t required, either, and specifically mentions that if a student is uncomfortable sharing a restroom with a transgender person they can be offered a single stall restroom

these protections also cover correct pronoun use as well, along with other guidelines

So I’d like to walk you through a metaphor here.

A few weeks ago, I broke my ankle. My options were either to let it heal on its own, and limp permanently, or to get a complex set of permanent metal implants.

As I signed the consent forms, I was scared and bawling my eyes out. After the surgery, I cried and screamed and the pain was unbearable.

Not one person questioned my decision to go through with the surgery, because it was understood I would not want a limp for the rest of my life. My emotions never brought my consent into question.

So why is it that my emotions about a medical process were respected and separate from my choice when it was a limp for the rest of my life, but if a woman has emotions tied to a medical procedure and doesn’t want a baby for the rest of her life, or the high medical risks of pregnancy, it’s grounds to question the validity of her choice?

A woman can be sad about her abortion and still know it was the best choice for her. Just like I sobbed as I got ready for surgery.

So as my transistion fundraiser draws to an end. I’d like to make a new post asking for material help rather than financial.

I am a trans demi-girl and femme. I am currently unemployed, as well as being autistic and phyisically disabled.Both of which affect my ability to find a job.

I have been openly transistioning for the last year, and plan this year on making aapointments with the GIC and begining the steps to medically transition.

I currently have a lack of the following:

Feminine clothes for day to day

Feminine accessories

Makeup that is within it’s use by date (nearly all of my makeup is out of date, and I keep breaking out as a result)

Students of color are allowed to enter the classroom but never on an equal footing. When they walk in, they are subject to the same racial stereotypes and expectations that exist in the larger society. Students of color do not have the advantage of walking into a classroom as individuals; they walk in as black, brown, [yellow] or red persons with all the connotations such racialization raises in the classroom. They do not walk into a classroom where the curriculum embraces their histories. They walk into a classroom where their histories and cultures are distorted, where they feel confused about their own identities, vulnerabilities, and oppressions. There is no level of liberal reforms that can alter these experiences for students of color without directly challenging the larger systems in society.
