the fact that toei is seemingly incapable of more consistently casting actresses over 18 to play either high school students or actual adult characters (see nem, lizel, and rinne from the last 3 kr shows)... like if they don't finally get their shit together and stop pissing us off -_-

(and here's to hoping the rumor that takahashi is still head writer for this season isn't true bc we could use a bit of a break from his style *and* i don't need him to break his streak of only writing a show every 3 years or so - i'm more hopeful that if the arakawa rumor is true instead, he could at least give us something different while still interesting, but i know he's also gotten a little weird with some teen/high schooler female characters in the past so at this rate it's like. hm)

i'm the one who sent in the ask about casting adult actresses to play both teen and adult female characters instead of whatever toei's been doing recently, and i cited the examples of nem, lizel, and rinne but i wanted to clarify that i meant rinne as a general example of the overall phenomenon where in this case she was a high schooler played by a 15 year old when she could have been played by a legal adult like someone around the same age as hotaro's actor who was already 18 then - not that she's an example of an adult character being played by a teen actress, bc ik the way i phrased it could be a bit confusing 😅

it was confusing bc this is the first I'm hearing rinne's actress was 15... that's so young. and the character is supposed to be 17? I'm running out of useful and coherent complaints to make. I just don't like it at all

if it's takahashi again I'll destroy toei studios. arakawa is better than him but like you say he has been quite weird in the past. I don't think there's anyone in toei's stable of writers who I would trust 100% to write this teenage girl who's the boss of the adult man lead dynamic. I guess kobayashi since she managed to write the shinkenger arc where kaoru takes over from takeru and then hands him the reins again without pissing me off

there doesn't HAVE to be romantic subtext between the main rider and heroine. they can be platonic. I'm praying for it this time

Did you ever finish watching s1 of Akane Banashi? What were your thoughts on it?

I haven't yet and I don't know when I'll get to it! I only got up to episode seven. that was when I was like, hikaru is my new favorite character

Just wanna say i love reading your book review thoughts - i haven't read many of the books that you mention but it's always fun to see what you comment on and sometimes it's gotten me to add some titles to my own to-read list! (or warned me off of particularly bad books that i might want to avoid lol)

aww thank you <3 sometimes I feel a little self-conscious like "do people even read these?!" and I'll never stop posting them but it does make me feel better to know people enjoy them

I’ve been harping on the timeline but I guess my problem is really that I think you would have to go through a radical change in your understanding of yourself from someone who doesn’t want to fuck aliens to someone who does. even if you’re already a monsterfucker you would surely have some thoughts when confronted with the chance to make it real. this woman has no thoughts about how it feels to find herself attracted to an alien. there’s a couple lines of dialogue where she acknowledges that it’s weird but no internal monologue. I want her to be like “well I would definitely crush on a human being with this personality so maybe it’s not so strange” and put into words what attracts her about his body. it’s different from realizing you’re gay but I think it would involve a similar amount of self-reflection and even second-guessing bc it’s different from the norm. she just meets aliens and then is ready to have sex with one in a book that is otherwise about lengthy negotiations and coming to consensus in the community and thinking through your actions

haven’t seen the full episode yet so i could be wrong, but i wonder if mikuru not wanting to disappoint the chairwoman is because as an older woman and authority figure, she subconsciously reminds mikuru of her mysterious star detective grandma we still don’t know much about (other than she gave mikuru her pendant and they’ve eaten a mille-feuille together?). i wonder if once the whole cure eclair thing gets resolved we’ll get more about mikuru’s backstory or if we’ll focus on luluka instead (since she’s also got a lot going on).

she says she respects the chairwoman so much bc she supported her dream to become a star detective. so it's like "wow an adult who believes in me and doesn't think my goal is silly" and probably does remind her of grandma too

I assume after resolving cure eclair the show will move to focus on luluka since she was eclair's partner, then mikuru, then finally anna returns to her own time
