For much of my life I never anticipated that I would love someone so truly, so purely, so deeply, that life without tying myself to them would be unthinkable. And then I met you. Sylvia Plath said ‘you are everything to me. You deepen the red of my blood.’ For all the reading I did to come up with musings that would make you feel seen, this was the one that stuck. Being near you makes my veins hum, my eyes brighten, and years slough from my skin. Having your calloused hand near me when my brain risks running away is a grounding force I didn’t know I needed. You resist limits, resist cages, and yet you don’t resist our love. Some say that love is nothing but confinement, and that no good thing can last. Just your existence is proof that they’re wrong. With you I feel so free and weightless that it's impossible to put into words. I struggle to look away from you when we’re near each other because everything else pales in comparison. You are the best thing that ever happened to me, and the best part of all is that we chose each other. My breath eases when you touch me, when you run your fingers through my hair and make a witty remark that I should invest in detangler. I never would, it terrifies me to think I’d deprive myself of the intimacy of you doing it. You unwind me. Should you be sick, I promise to be your most devoted caretaker. Should you be angry, I promise patience and understanding. Should you be sad, I promise to brighten your days and crack jokes that you will laugh too hard at. For every bad day you go through and every gloomy raincloud that hangs above your head, I promise to be steadfastly by your side through it and to remain your ‘Sunshine’. I promise my true and utter devotion, and all of the obsessed doting that inevitably follows. I am desperately, fawningly in love with you. It is my greatest joy in life that out of the infinite web of choices we get to make, you and I chose each other. I will choose you again, and again, and again. I am overwhelmingly blessed that at the end of this ceremony, I will be able to call myself your wife. I love you, Mac.
