Overview The Masters of Fire International Exhibition of Contemporary Bladesmiths took place at the Macao Museum of Art from October 14, 2005 through January 15, 2006. Masters of Fire was a pioneering exhibition of the bladesmith's craft as art, and showcased the work of 18 current bladesmiths from Brazil, Canada, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Sweden and the United States. One of the smiths whose work was exhibited was the well-known and highly regarded blade smith from the United States, Vince Evans, and the piece reviewed here was his submission.

Vince Evans has been a full-time blade smith since 1981. He is well-known for his fine creations of swords that are historically accurate in their details, without being exact reproductions of any particular piece. Vince's wife, Grace, often collaborates with him in the creation of his pieces. In this case, Grace provided the research to support the design. I have admired Vince's work since I first became aware of it several years ago, and eventually hoped to obtain at least one of his pieces. When this piece appeared as "available" on Vince's Web site, I immediately contacted him. Working with Vince was a pleasure. Once we had quickly come to terms on the purchase, he immediately dispatched it to my home, securely packed in a concrete forming tube. The sword arrived in perfect condition. Then and now, Vince has been very easy to deal with and indulgent of my many questions.

Conclusion This exquisitely finished sword is a worthy example of the art of one of our finest contemporary blade smiths. I am truly thrilled to have it in my custody. It was a pleasure dealing with Vince Evans, and I hope to be able to acquire more of his work in the future.

Albion Armorers Next Generation Gallowglass Sword -- myArmoury.com

Overview It appears that with the ever-increasing diversity of sword types in its Next Generation lineup, Albion Armorers is attempting to eventually produce every form of blade in Ewart Oakeshott's Typology—with various hilt and pommel combinations. To say that they have done an exceptional job of replicating historical aesthetics, feel, and performance with their blades, would be somewhat of an understatement.

The Gallowglass is just one more truly fine example of Albion's dedication to providing the sword collecting community with accurate historical representations. Although not based upon any particular single historic sword, with an Oakeshott Type XIX blade mated to an Irish ring pommel, Albion's chief designer, Peter Johnsson, has given us an amazingly unique visual example and feel of the 14th-16th centuries.

Conclusion Over the past couple of years, Albion Armorers, with the meticulous designs of Peter Johnsson, has brought sword collectors a new level of production swords, and with continued offerings—especially with blades like the Gallowglass—I believe they will only continue to impress a discerning group which has come to expect only the best from this company. In my opinion, the Gallowglass Sword is an impressive design, which combines many distinct parts into a beautiful whole which should be enjoyed by anyone privileged enough to own such a piece of art.

Vladimir Cervenka Flambard Rapier -- myArmoury.com

Overview This flambard rapier was a custom piece created by Vladimir Cervenka and commissioned by long-time myArmoury.com member Kirk Spencer. Kirk had utilized records of several recorded measurements of period rapiers and specified that he wanted this rapier to be based on an average of those measurements.

The purpose of the flambard-style blade is often debated by scholars and enthusiasts. There is no hard evidence as to whether it was done purely for aesthetics or if it had a functional purpose. Many debate whether or not the edges were designed to make the sword more efficient at slicing and cutting. When Kirk loaned this sword to me to review, he specifically asked for me to do comparison test cuts with it to see if there were any functional differences between it and other straight-edged rapiers. I performed several test cutting experiments with it and five other rapiers that had straight edges, which will be elaborated on below. The tests were not measured under hard scientific rules, and as such should not be taken as gospel. Even still, they do convey certain general ideas about the cutting ability of this particular sword verses others.

Conclusion I am incredibly impressed with the workmanship of this piece. It has both the looks and the feel of an original 17th century rapier. Furthermore, it captures the beauty, grace and form of some of the highest quality antiques. There is very little that one can complain about with this sword. It is a remarkable weapon when used with period rapier fencing techniques, and it is gorgeous to look at. My hat is definitely off to Vladimir Cervenka, who is clearly a weaponsmith of enormous talent.
