I have this indistinct kind of thought

About Natsuko and the delivery room scene from the Boy and the Heron.

I had a lot of sympathy for her, at first, stepping into an already preexisting family, filling her sister’s shoes, which can never truly be filled because she’s gone and made perfect by her memory, her husband’s son, who doesn’t engage with her, acts coldly and pulls away when she tries to reach out, she’s displaced

But this scene

Threw me

Something about deflecting and passing on her own pain onto the next generation

Something about rejecting so she can’t be rejected

About being weak, when the adult in a situation is supposed to be strong

About the movie’s overall themes of corruption and forgiveness

About how Mahito screamed over her to come with him

I don’t know

I think the boy and the heron is one of the best myazaki has ever done. I really hate the discourse around the movie with people saying that this is too confusing, I mean have you seen chihiro ? That shit is batshit insane compared to the boy and the heron, you have just lost your ability to feel movies, not explain them. And the story is not that complicated, there are just a lot of strong emotions to take in and let sink in your brain to apprecite this one. I mean the movie says itself "those who will try to understand will perish" at this point you just need to let go of usual logic and appreciate the stunning animation, great set pieces and the powerful emotions
