Cine: Phi Chai / My Bromance (2014)

Bank ("Fluke" Natouch Siripongthon) no puede ser más adorable: es pequeño, tímido, respetuoso y emite una ternura irresistible. Sin embargo, desde el principio recibe el constante rechazo de Golf (Teerapat Lohanan) por tratarse del hijo de la nueva novia de su padre viudo. Para peor, ambos asisten al mismo curso y se sientan en bancos contiguos.

Un simple acto de inesperada bondad quiebra el hielo entre ambos y convierte una relación de casi hermanos a la fuerza en algo más poderoso que, una vez expuesto, despierta adhesiones y rechazos furibundos que acaban por separarlos. En el medio, la fascinación de un popular cantante pop, Thom (Withawat Thaokhamlue) que amenaza con entrometerse entre ellos a la vez que el destino les espera con una sorpresa trágica.

Esta película tailandesa de Nitchapoom Chaianun parece, en efecto, una versión moderna del muy shakespereano "Romeo y Julieta", pero estamos frente a un romance ("bromance", en realidad: la unión de "brother", hermano, y "romance") de gran sensibilidad que, aunque parezca extraordinario, continúa en un cortometraje titulado "My Bromance: Reunion" (2016) y aún una serie de dos temporadas y veintiún episodios ("My Bromance: The Series", 2016 y "My Bromance: 5 Years Later", 2023). Toda esta saga, comenzando por este filme, será oportunamente reseñada en este blog.

There are several adaptations of this work, and there is meant to be a sequel coming out later this year (2020) that is set 5 years later. But they’ve been saying that for ages and it’s still not out and IT’S FINE I’M NOT BITTER I HAVEN’T BEEN WAITING 6 YEARS OR ANYTHING *ross voice* I’m fine.

They did a series in 2016 [https://mydramalist.com/20502-my-bromance-the-series] which was also good, and stars Cooper (from My Engineer) but personally I think the original is still the best.

Going back to 2014 here, this is some OG bl stuff guys, don’t expect the same kind of tropey out+proud fluff you’re used to. This feels much more like a mid00s queer indie film, rather than “BL”. It is a bit darker, and it does NOT have a happy ending (hence the fan demand for a sequel).

However, the organic and raw tone of this movie makes it one of the original and the best. Trigger warning, it is about step-brothers, and has some darker moments - due to this ‘forbidden love’ story, and it also deals with grief a lot, as the mother has recently passed away. Yet, I find myself rewatching it many years later, and the sweet moments between them have such a natural, understated quality to them. You just don’t find stuff like this anymore!

This was Fluke’s (from Red Wine In The Dark, and Until We Meet Again) first main role - and he’s so precious baby in it - but already so talented.
