You Snooze, You Lose: National Make Your Bed Week
Make Your Bed week is coming to an end but we hope that each day has been proven to lower your stress, increase productivity, and even help you get a better night’s sleep. Also, it must have been nice to show off that amazing bedding set!
We’ve teamed up with Dropps, a small company that creates easy to use and superior laundry products, to explain the best and easiest ways to care for your favorite luxury linens after a productive week.
SHEETS & DUVET COVERS
Your sheets and duvet covers should ideally be washed weekly to remove dust, dirt, and oil build-up from the fibers. Washing your bedding regularly not only keeps it looking fresh (and as beautiful as the day you bought it), but it also aids in getting a better night’s sleep and keeping bacteria and allergens at bay.
Here are a couple tips:
Prep your bedding: Make sure zippers on your duvet are closed.
Don’t over stuff the washer: Add one set of linens per wash to all even washing.
Use color safe detergent: To keep things simpler, use a gentle detergent pac—and even a mineral-based scent booster for a light, calming scent.
Air dry if possible: But you can use low heat to ensure the dryer doesn’t scorch or shrink the fabric.
Remove and fold or make up your bed immediately: This will eliminate wrinkles and prevent a laundry to pile up on your un-made bed.
Bonus: See here for tips on how to make your bed like a pro—hello, hospital corners and easy-to-stuff duvet covers!
COMFORTERS & PILLOWS
Pillow covers and duvets are ideal for extending the life of your bedding and keeping it soft, clean, and stain-free. And with these in place, your comforters and pillows should only need to be washed about 2-3 times a year.
Here are some tips:
Check care labels: Generally, even your most luxurious cotton and down filled comforters are machine washable, but they may require some extra room in the washer, so make sure to wash them separately from any other linens. These plush pillows made of cotton or down alternative are machine washable as well, but should be washed in pairs to keep your machine balanced.
Use a gentle setting: Place a mild liquid detergent pac into the washer with your comforter or pillows, and wash in cold water on a gentle setting for the best results, and dry thoroughly on low heat.
Use tennis balls: Place two (clean) tennis balls into the dryer fluff your comforter and pillows!

1 Bed, 3 Looks
Tired of the same old look? Don’t limit yourself to one bedding style. Keep your room fresh and contemporary by switching between these 3 bedding styles all year round.
Style #1: Traditional elegance. The combination of a top sheet and duvet cover is a classic duo. It’s a great look to use when you want to show off your beautiful embroidered or patterned sheets. It’s also an elegant style that adds a subtle contrast to a vibrant bedding set. To achieve this look, add a neutral colored top sheet that pairs well with your duvet’s beautiful hue.
Style #2: Scandinavian soul. This European style of sleeping is great for couples who play blanket tug-of-war in the middle of the night. With two duvet covers as opposed to one, this Scandinavian style not only stops the long game of tug-of-war but also allows you to use different comforter inserts based on your preferred level of warmth. Aside from being practical, this style also looks beautiful with matching duvets. You can barely tell that they’re two separate sets!
Style #3: Top Sheet-less. Let’s face it, top sheets aren’t necessary! In fact, nearly half the women we surveyed say that they no longer sleep with a top sheet. When you go top sheet-less, most duvets have an identical back that looks nice and neat when folded over. But if you’re looking to change it up, use a reversible duvet cover.
Which is your favorite? Do you sleep with a top sheet or with your own bedding set? We’d love to hear how you change up your sleep style!
A Busy Person’s Guide to Making the Bed
Making the bed doesn’t often make it onto one’s to-do list. Here at Crane & Canopy, we are simplifying and changing the game of traditional bed-making with these quick and easy steps. No matter how busy you are, you’ll now never leave your house with a messy bed.
Clear the bed of everything except for the fitted sheet. Think of it as a clean canvas that you can easily build upon.
Adjust the fitted sheet to be nice and snug with minimal wrinkles. Pull and tuck at the corners to give it that freshly put-on look.
Eliminate the use of a top sheet. Taking away the top sheets gets rid of extra steps in making the bed. You won’t get frustrated with a bunched sheet at the end of your bed or perfectly tucking in the fitted sheet properly. If you do decide to keep your top sheet, an easy way to make it look nice is to drape it off the side. There’s also no need to spend time folding hospital corners.
Toss on the duvet cover. You read it right. Just give it a nice toss and smooth it out.
Quickly position your pillows and throws. This small touch will give your bed some extra comfort and personality.
Still in a hurry? Try our Nova bedding. The Nova was designed for a busy person since it takes 80% less time to make a bed and looks perfect every time as well.
4 Reasons to Make Your Bed
Making your bed every morning is one of life’s small, but important tasks. In celebration of Make Your Bed Week this week, we have pulled together our top four reasons why you should make your bed every day.
Your productivity will increase. By making the bed the first thing you do every morning, you will have started off the day having already accomplished something. As Admiral Bill McRaven of the US Navy SEALs put it in his 2014 UT commencement speech, “It will encourage you to do another task and another and another”.
Your room will look great. Your bed is the biggest piece of furniture in your bedroom. Even if the rest of the room is tidy and clean, a messy bed will make your bedroom look sloppy and chaotic. Plus, there is nothing like crawling into a beautifully made bed after a long day.
You’ll sleep better. It’s been proven that those who make their beds get better sleep than those who do not make their beds. According to a 2012 National Sleep Foundation survey, those who make their beds every day were more likely to say they get a good night’s sleep.
You’ll feel happier. Your bedroom just looks better and more inviting after a long day when it’s made. In a survey by Hunch.com of over 68,000 people, bed makers are happier and more successful than their rumple-sheet peers. 71% of bed makers consider themselves happy are more likely to like their jobs, own a home, exercise regularly and feel well rested vs. the 62% of non-bed makers are unhappy.
