Hi! I love your blog, I'm a reptile enthusiast as well💚 I also have two adult male ferrets, 4 and 6, and these guys are driving me nuts. they won't poop in a litter box, or even in one corner for that matter. Ive owned 6 ferrets in my life and I've never had this problem. I use newspaper in their cage so I can switch it out as soon as I can. They just poop wherever they are basically lol. Any advice?
I would definitely say that if it’s a sudden development I would consider a vet visit…but also ferrets can be buttheads about using litter boxes without a medical reason so I don’t want to get you panicked.
Hmm it’s hard if they won’t even use a corner because it’s pretty instinctual for ferrets. The first thing I would make sure of is that you’re using an enzymatic cleaner and cleaning up messes very thoroughly to try and reduce smells. I’m a fan of Nature’s Miracle. If they poop elsewhere you could try putting a bit of the poo in the litter box to hopefully get those good smells in there. I’ve also found that mine get worse about using the litter box if I don’t keep it clean. I scoop 2x/day and do a full litter box cleaning 1x/week and a full cage cleaning 2-4x/month. The cleaner I keep the cage the more willing they seem to use the litter boxes.
Check your husbandry too–is the food too close to the litter box? Ferrets, or really any animals, don’t like to go to the bathroom near their food so if it’s too close to the litter box they might be avoiding it. On that note, you can try to use food to influence where you don’t want them to use the bathroom. Putting food down where they are inappropriately going may discourage them from going there. You can also try multiple litter boxes. I have two covering each corner in one side of their cage and even if they miss the boxes they pretty much always go in that general area. Try different litter, and different amounts of litter–you never know if they’re finding something aversive. If you are using any kind of scented litter I would recommend switching away as some animals (and me–I hate the stuff) can get overwhelmed by the smell of scented litter.
Honestly this sounds goofy but when I actively catch a ferret trying to go outside the litter box (usually in their play pen) I just pick them up and deposit their butts into the box and that usually does the trick to get them to remember the appropriate place to poop.
I hope some of that is helpful!
