Hi :) I was listening to a song today (Angels by Owl City) when I felt that something was weird, and I realised that the piano in parts of the song was blue when pianos are usually only shades of pink and yellow. Can certain sounds get more colours or could it have been that the song itself affected the colours?
In my experience, it's the song itself that affects the colors, textures, etc. :)
Since people are talking about school, there was one time during a music class back when I was in secondary school where the teacher played songs to the class and told us to describe them. I said one of the songs was too aggressively red, and everyone, even the teacher, started laughing. But that was before I realised that I have synesthesia so now I don't feel that bad about it :) Though it would have been nice if I could have explained it to them.
Second question: is it possible to develop more types of synesthesia? I've had sound colour synesthesia for as long as I can remember, but just yesterday when I was in bed listening to the music in my head and watching the colours, I started tasting the sounds as well. Could it be something I just never paid attention to or do you think it has something to do with falling asleep? Thanks!
It may be your sleepingness. Some parts in the brain analyze complex visual scenes are more active when you're sleeping, or pretty sleepy. Maybe when you listen to the music and see the colors, that part of the brain enables you to taste the sounds, since the taste parts of the brain are in most cases inactive. In conclusion, I think you've always had sound-taste, but when you're falling asleep, as in you needed the extra push. :)
Hi Rene! Great job on the blog, it's wonderful to see so many other synesthetes here. I have two questions that I started wondering about today. Firstly, do you or anyone here hear music when you're falling asleep? I usually do; it's music from inside my head, and usually it's classical, sometimes orchestral, and sometimes it's people singing. I find it really nice but I'm still trying to figure out a way to record them down. :)
Helo!Yes! It happens to me every night! Usually right before I go to sleep, I'll hear something like a glorious orchestra (it's always songs that Bach, Beethoven, Hans Zimmerman could have written) or duets, quartets or solos of any kind; yet when I "realize" I'm hearing music, the orchestra stops and the room grow quiet. It can be the same song for a week, but when I start to really concentrate on the whole score, it goes away, so I let it all flow and daydream it all away.
Hi, there's a thing called a conditioned food aversion, where you'll avoid a kind of food if you happened to feel sick after eating it (even if the food didn't cause it). Do you experience conditioned sound aversions? If I listened to a certain song before or when I'm ill, I can never listen to it again when I'm well or I'll feel sick all over again. I asked around but no one else seems to feel this way too. My friend suggested it might be because of my synesthesia. Could it be because of that?
Yeah, it happens to me :) I had a really bad throat infection once and I couldn't listen to "Jaded" by Aerosmith for almost a year xD
Anyone else?
In reply to rbjmh, I can feel sounds too. :) Some kinds of funk bass are unbearable because I can feel it compressing my rib cage, and other kinds of music can feel smooth or like a light breath of air across my arms or face. Shouting feels like a pinching sensation on the back of my neck.
Yay! We're not alone :)
Does anybody want to test-drive my Sherlolly mix because frowny and uncertain about it rn
Please?
(ALSO HANNAH I HAVE THREE SONGS FOR A MORMOR MIX IF WE'RE STILL DOING THAT?) (fanmixes take me a LONG TIME)
