I think a lot of us grow up with an idea of how our lives will turn out.
We dream of a great job, a nice house, a nice car, marriage, a family, a long and happy life. Would you agree that that’s the norm?
But then we get here, to adulthood, and time starts flying by. Life starts throwing curveballs. Maybe you have a baby with someone you didn’t intend to stay with. Maybe you’re a single parent all of a sudden. Maybe your job is shit. Maybe that degree you worked so hard for doesn’t get you any job prospects. Maybe public transportation is your only option. Maybe you live in an apartment that’s the size of Mariah Careys smallest closet.
Before you know it, you’re in your 30s thinking, where the hell did all that time go? Why haven’t you accomplished anything you wanted to?
I’ve gone through that stage… the next stage is a deep understanding of the struggle that is life. It’s not meant to be planned down to the minute. Where’s the fun in that? Even the best fairytales never go smoothly all the way through. The joy is in the journey. Happiness isn’t a destination, it’s an experience.
Life has quite the sense of humor… though it isn’t always as funny as it thinks it is. I’m at the brunt of a joke in my life right now. I found the love of my life 11 years ago and didn’t say a word, even though I felt it in my SOUL that he was supposed to be in my life. When I finally got around to saying something he was in year 6 of a minimum of 12 years in prison… and now I’m riding that out with him. I always wonder, what if I had said something then? Would things have gone differently? Would I have the life I wanted?
The moral of my story is, don’t wait for happiness - take it. Don’t say “maybe later” when it’s something you truly want. Say what you feel. Don’t hold back. It could alter the whole course of your life and you don’t want to spend the rest of yours wondering “what if,” trust me.
