His earlier work definitely lacked something, but when The Great Silence came out in '68 I think Corbucci as a director really created his magnum opus, breaking away from some of the humour and satire of his the rest of his body of work.
It plays out entirely seriously, focusing on American authoritarianism. The film has a nihilistic, bleak plot and the landscape of heavy snow really sets it apart from other westerns. It is an incredible subversion of a typical western. Truly one of the greatest films in its genre.
Its been said it was created in reflection to the death of Malcom X, the pervading sense of hopelessness and pessimism, bodies piling up under the snow, there is no catharsis, the good guys do not win, justice will never be achieved in this world. Only the law as it stands matters.
