There are places in this world you have to work to get to. I guess most places are that way if you think about it. Yes, we have easy transportation between major centers like airports and seaports, but to go past those places takes more coordination. Even trains, buses and taxis can only get you so far. You can't buy a ticket to this place in the south Pacific or thousands like it. But perhaps making your way to such places is what makes them all the more thrilling. This boat sails in the eastern islands of Papua New Guinea. Off of Panapompom island to be specific. A place our expedition leaders knew about to share this bit of Polynesian culture with us. Such are the places you can go on a Lindblad Expeditions tour. Generally not the normal tourist highlights, but the places in this world that are culturally or naturally unique. And at the same time, being a high class operation they treat everyone very well. Such as the beach BBQ we had on the uninhabited island adjacent. Though the work I had to do to get this adventure was somewhat stressful, I am grateful that I had the opportunity I would have never have been able to afford otherwise. Misty Fjords National Monument, Ketchikan, Alaska, USA. Last week I shared a similar pic with the airplane but like I said, I got this one without. Each has it's merits. Which one do you like better? It was such a beautiful day to fly. So clear and calm. I might have liked a few clouds to add a bit more interest but all the same, I couldn't have asked for anything better. What amazed me (besides the sheer awesome beauty) was how calm the lake was even after landing a floatplane on it not too long before. The reflection way more than I expected. Yes, there are some ripples, but not too bad. I've said it before, it's really hard to take a bad picture with beauty like this to enjoy. . . . Jun 2021 . Occasionally my work takes me to interesting places. Recently I was in the Los Angeles area - Chino Hills specifically. Now my work is fairly tech related, but the venues I work in have a variety of styles. In this case, they have this patio area with a Southwestern or Spanish theme. So me being me, while taking a break I walked around and got a few pics. Very nice as a slight escape from the city around. For instance, on the other side of that wall is a parking lot and beyond that a freeway. But pick the right angles, and I could be anywhere. A Hacienda. This one is for my brother the fixed wing pilot. It's certainly not a Goose, but a fun experience all the same. If only I was more used to flying in small planes so I wouldn't get motion sickness so easily. I didn't get totally sick this time, but knew the feelings that were starting. And I'm sorry to say it seems almost normal for me to get sick after visiting my most adventuresome client. Once again, I got to take advantage of a business trip to a new place (for me): Ketchikan, Alaska. Since the trip went through Friday, I took an extra day and had some fun. Since it was last minute, it took some calling but I managed to get on a tour flight through the Misty Fjords National Monument. As you might expect, stunningly gorgeous as you can see in the pic. For some, you might look and say that it's a bunch of mountains, forest, and lakes. And islands in the lakes. And lakes (ponds) on the islands in the lake on the island. But for me it's serene beauty. I really enjoyed flying with Misty Fjords Air and Outfitting! I highly recommend Dave and the team. Thanks for letting me tag along. . . Some of the highlights of my life have been working trips with some pleasure thrown in. It doesn't happen often with my job, but when it has it's been pretty fantastic! Have you been able to take advantage of such trips? I think many work trips provide the opportunity - if you decide to get out and see what you can. This was a trip I had on the National Geographic ship Orion starting in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Though of course this was a fun moment rather than a working one. Still, I'll say you can't beat an "office view" like this! Of course, there was work to do and maybe I shouldn't mention the bit of seasickness. Just so you know it wasn't all fun and sun. But it was an adventure all the same. If you're interested in a Nat Geo expedition I do recommend them. But beware: they're not cheap though they are all inclusive. And they are expeditions - not cruises in the traditional sense. Meaning we went places very few other ships go. Exotic places - but not your normal tourist spots (like PNG). And they provide a lot of cultural, geological, and ecological learning. If you want to learn about the world and and cultures (not just visit) - check out their options! . Nov 2014 .
