As part of their reward tier on Patreon, KiwiToast receives a special 500 word snippet of their choice. For July, KiWiToast has requested a snippet between their two DnD characters, Desire and Nerovain, centered around the philosophy of no one being born evil.
Nerovain looks at the vastness before him, a thoughtful expression on his face as he takes in the moment of peace. The cliff’s edge gives him the best view of the sky and of the forest that surrounds them. There’s something melancholic about the way the sun rises, bringing forth light. It’s supposed to signal the beginning of a new day, a new life, a new hope. Many people fear the darkness, what can hide within it and what it represents, and welcome the dawning of the sun with warmth. Yet he can only sit here and wonder if the sun truly casts away the darkness or only makes it more prominent in the shadows it casts.
He’s aware of Desire’s presence behind him, but says nothing as she plops down beside him.
“I never thought I’d find you admiring sunrises,” she nudges him gently, causing him to scowl as he scoots a bit farther from her, “You didn’t strike me as that sensitive.”
His eyes drift to the shadows starting to become more noticeable under the canopy, “It’s not the sun I’m admiring.”
Desire huffs, leaning back on her elbows, “Only you can sit in front of such a beautiful sight and focus on the negativity.”
“You act like that surprises you,” Nerovain leans back with, admittedly more grace than she does, “It’s not as I can help being born like this.”
Desire turns to look at him, an expression of disbelief on her face, “I would ask if you were joking, but we both know you don’t have a sense of humor… But you can’t honestly believe that, can you?”
Nerovain raises a brow, he doesn’t see why it’s so shocking to her. True, she hasn’t always been the brightest thinker of the bunch, but surely even she can see the truth of the situation? That him being the way that he is is something so predetermined by fate that he has no control of it if he tried.
“No one’s born evil or negative or any of that shit,” Desire states bluntly, “That’s just stupid. We choose who we want to be.”
He doesn’t like where this is going, what it can imply. Destiny is what makes him, everyone, who they are. You are born and from that moment, everything you are and will become is already decided. It’s simply your duty to fulfil what is required of you.
Desire continues with valor, sitting up straight as she favors using her hands to gesture, as if it adds to her point, “Sometimes who we are isn’t the best, but then it’s up to us to realize that we’re being pieces of shit and fucking change.”
Desire doesn’t seem to notice the way that his hands grip the grass beside him in a tight fist. Anger bubbling in his chest. Something in the back of his mind says not to act out, to not fight back, don’t ruin what took so long to build.
“I’ve changed,” She gestures toward him, “You’ve changed. You’re still a negative fucking ass, but you’re not, ya know, evil.”
“And how would you know that,” he bites back, “I could be planning everyone’s destruction for all you know.”
She’s not impressed, not even when his face is flushed and he’s mere inches from her face, brows furrowed in anger. She knows him, whether he wants to believe it or not, after all their time together, she knows him.
He expected her to yell, to bite back, to do something to fuel the building rage in his chest that doesn’t have an outlet.
“No, but you didn’t know that,” he huffs and stands, not speaking another word as he leaves.
He still doesn’t believe her, he still doesn’t believe that what he’s done could’ve been any different, otherwise what would that make him?
