D: If you had the choice of going without writing forever or going without dinner forever, which one would you choose?
Dinner. I love writing too much, plus I can still eat at other times of the day. And have snacks. I snack more than I meal anyway.
P: What are your goals for things to happen to your writing? (Getting published, getting a good review, having a fandom, etc)
Oh gosh. Getting “published” definitely. I write mostly screenplays, so getting to develop my screenplays into an actual movie or TV show would be amazing. And to make a difference to someone with my writing. Making a difference to people, having people understand what I wrote and having it mean something to them, that’s probably what I want most. I also like to write things that’ll open or change minds. All of this sounds incredibly arrogant, I am aware.
B: How often do you write?
About once or twice a week. I want to commit to more, but at the moment that’s where it’s at. I may not write a lot, but at least a couple times a week I sit down and get some words out.
O: What motivates you to write?
Spite about half of the time. Excited jitteriness about the ideas and the story about a quarter of the time. Habit or depression or a need to feel like I Accomplished Something the rest of the time.
But honestly, spite. I’m surprised there is less spite writing in the world, but spite motivates me a lot. Most people I know are really inspired by seeing great films and reading great books, but I am much more intrigued by stuff that kind of sucks. Either from a problem solving perspective or from an entitled perspective that so much money/commitment/popularity was “wasted” on something “that could be so much better” instead of on something good. I wrote a whole pilot after watching Sword Art Online and hating it and feeling robbed of a squandered premise. In fact “feeling robbed of a squandered premise” is a HUGE motivating factor for me. I’m not always so interested in coming up with original ideas. I do a lot of writing based on stealing common ideas out of anger because No One Is Doing It Correctly and I’ll Show Them How To Tell This Story. I often think I’d make a better development executive than a writer, to be honest. Figuring out what could be changed to fix a broken movie or book or TV show is one of my favourite things to do.
But, yeah, “I’m mad this thing wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be” or “I’m mad something like this doesn’t already exist in popular culture” spite writing is my jam.
K: Share an old, embarrassing work?
OH GOD. Um. Here’s my old terrible fanfiction.net account from when I was 14. Angsty Sailor Moon fic, melodramatic CCS fic, and all. -_-
V: What do you listen to when you write?
Depends a lot on the story, though music is a huge necessity for me when writing. I have a hard time focusing if I don’t have music on and if I’m not playing appropriate music for what I’m writing in the background.
Video game soundtracks are really good for writing, for me personally. I often find one to stream. You just find a game with a tone similar to the work you are writing and then let it play. Because video game music is designed to help you focus and the fade into the background it usually works out pretty well. Also just in general soundtracks and existing albums that could, in my head, work as temp tracks for the thing I’m writing usually work.
If I’m writing fannish stuff I’ll often listen to the official music from whatever franchise I’m writing for.
