How does a wind turbine work?

Students designed and built their own working wind turbines to learn about electricity and power generation. Students took measurements to calculate how much power each turbine produced. A couple of groups were able to light an LED bulb.

Initial meetings

So I’ve had several chats with LK regarding our RQs and possible collection methods and all looks rosey - the DP chem focus on IAs at the moment is just rolling into this work!!

LK arranged a meeting with LW before SUNY today and things fell perfectly into place! Given the green light to complete essentially the same research, we have ideas for baseline data collection, surveys, change in approach, and Actioned data collection. Good day all round!!

How does an electric circuit work?

Students role-played the parts of an electric circuit in order to learn about current, voltage and resistance.

Can we use fruit to light up a lightbulb?

Yes we can! Students created a mega-lemon battery with copper and zinc electrodes and managed to generate enough voltage and current to light up an LED light bulb.

Which materials build up the most static electricity?

Students used various materials such as ebonite, plastic, fur, PVC, silk, glass etc...and charging by friction to see which combinations would build up the most static. They tested their predictions by trying to pick up small scraps of paper and bend a stream of water.

How do elements form compounds?

Each student represented an element from the periodic table. They created signs with Bohr Rutherford diagrams and removable electrons. Students quickly figured out that they could bond with other students by sharing electrons to create stable valence shells.
