In my shed, I keep a book called Shed Decor which, when I first glanced at it, I was attracted to. I was making my shed that year. And then, after I bought it and brought it home, I started to enjoy hating it. Fake. Perhaps Instagram is the wrong place to bring up the question, but aren't people and places that constantly strive (through fakeness and filters and foolishness) to LOOK a certain way rather than BE a certain way kind of tiring after a while? That book cover says it all. The curled map, the large glass pitcher of milk - thirsty? - and a friggin' typewriter. Honestly. It reminds me of a story by my friend who worked for a gardening magazine. The family that had the gorgeous house and superstar garden paid architects and gardeners, but unfortunately didn't stop there; they paid a stylist to come over and make things really "special" just before the photographer and writer arrived. My friend whispered to the photographer "Please pick up those (expletive) apples!" The cute, antique, mini wooden barrel that the family never used was the protagonist of the fictitous "story", toppled over on its side, shiny red apples merrily rolling along the perfectly mown lawn. Honestly. I am not a philosopher, but there is a difference: One thing is searching for or trying to create and cultivate beauty -- whoever, however, wherever and whenever. Another thing is to create and celebrate fake: making yourself or your world, your home or garden or clothing look glam or so perfectly, almost painfully elegant or country (or whatever look you aim for) when your real world is, well, not what you try to portray and not what your followers see in your posts. Discerning eyes see a difference, and what at first seems attractive, may become, before too long, empty. But hey! Instagram rocks! Maybe the fake stuff is fun to make fun of. So where did I put my antique barrel and shiny red apples? 😂 #sheds #gardening #myshed #lamacchinafissa #fakeit #shinyredapples #gardensheds #homedecorating #fakeitandbakeit #countryhouses #ruralretreats #mezzofilosofo #antiques #oohlala #getreal #filterthefuckoutofit #hollywoodsmiles #faketan #youaresohotimgonnadie #fakefoodforthought (presso La Macchina Fissa) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRJPjMDrQ8O/?utm_medium=tumblr
