his closet

he cleaned out his closet

first time in decades

made a pile of shirts for goodwill

they were in piles divided by reason 

texture, size, style

it was a significant amount.

the next day, i took the shirts and started to fold them.

some had been dry cleaned many times and were thin from wear

some were never worn

some reminded me of seasons

in our life

and seasons of the year

some reminded me of when he was working and content

some brought memories of intimate connection

and then the shirt from his daughter

worn thin

the one he wore many winters

i thought i would keep a couple

instead i folded them

carefully

and tied up the bag
