Mack is gonna save Skye
Fuck yes.
Fabulous Fictional Females: Skye, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013-)
Usually one person doesn't have the solution. But a hundred people, with one percent of the solution? That'll get it done. I think that's beautiful, pieces solving a puzzle.
Skye | 1x01
I was thinking that SHIELD is slowly on its way to be excepted by the public again, which probably means that the team can get their identities back, and I can just picture Skye restoring everyone's papers and whatnot and start to create one for herself too like with Skye as a legal name and then just suddenly realizes that she has no last name she could use. Aaand I made myself sad
So, actually, this is a good moment to bring up my big question about Skye having deleted everyone’s identities — how did HYDRA have a file on Simmons? It seems to suggest that her file does exist, still? (And if SHIELD had re-made her identity in some way, they probably would have changed it, made her less the ‘perfect’ SHIELD agent? Certainly removed notes about her being a field agent…that seems to suggest that HYDRA had her actual file.)
So, I dunno. It’s a question. Does someone have an answer to that? Is that just one of those small plot holes that I should ignore, or is there another explanation? I figure people have probably been talking about this question in other parts of the interwebz, but in my part we were sort of focused on other parts of that episode. Or I was, at least.
As far as Skye restoring everyone’s identities and re-creating hers… It’s basically my headcanon that Skye has gone nuclear on her whole identity at least once before in her life. (Like, she at least obliterated Mary Sue Poots because that is not Skye’s name don’t call her that ever, what the fuck is wrong with people.) But I don’t know if “Skye” has existed as a legal individual, I suppose? Like, I want to say she could hack that (I think I’ve probably done that in more than one fic) but maybe she hasn’t? It would explain why Ward refused to take her name as “Skye” in 1x01? (Well, that and he doesn’t understand the importance of chosen identity, since he’s lived his whole life behaving as though he has no choices.)
About her last name… I think that when Koenig is giving her the lie detector we definitely get the sense that for Skye a last name is about a link to a family. So being in a situation where she can create her identity legally, I could see that being hard for her. At the same time, though, we’ve just seen Skye shed a link to her family because there are things that matter to her more than family. It’s one of those cases where as much as I can see it making her sad – especially now she’s cut any tie to her father – it could also be liberating? It could be acknowledging herself as herself. Or it could involve her taking a name that has significance in tying her to SHIELD, since she acknowledges SHIELD as her family?
(A whole scene/fic just occurred to me with Skye and Coulson discussing possibilities for her last name, which…hmm. Yeah.)
No need to excuse the rant I have made similar ones when it comes to Skye and the ridiculous amount of criticism thrown at her. Like you said bull shit. His line was "Tell Skye this doesn't change anything I'll keep my promise". Everything he's says about Skye always comes off a threat he's seriously obsessed. His brother and him are so alike I don't know which story to believe either way poor Thomas. Why do you think Coulson was looking at Ward file? I'm surprised they didn't ice him
(cont.)
or give him something to make him unconscious they know how dangerous he is and now those agents gov or shield are dead. Did you buy his story on Skye’s father and HYDRA agents her mom being dad? I can’t imagine Raina telling him every single detail in that episode last season.
So, I’ve been going back and forth on the ‘did Coulson partly plan for Ward’s escape’ question. (I had this argument with my husband at dinner last night, actually.) Partly, I think Coulson absolutely knew that Ward was likely going to be able to escape from whatever prison situation Christian put him in. I mean, the part of the file we were seeing over Coulson’s shoulder — which was unfortunately not the poo with knives that Maria Hill doodled — was about his combat experience. We’ve talked before in these parts about how Ward was definitely underselling his skills when he was in undercover/lying mode, and so I think Coulson understands Ward to be a huge threat because he’s actually better than his tests say he is? I think it would have been foolish to not consider that Ward might escape at some point in his imprisonment, is what I mean. So I think it makes sense for Coulson to have a plan for when/if that happened. (Like a tracker? Or a tail?)
However, as much as he might be preparing for a future Ward escape, I don’t take that to be the plan. (Or, I don’t want it to be the plan, maybe.) I just don’t think Coulson would knowingly sacrifice the lives of any of the men who came to transfer Ward. He warns them. He (one assumes) gives them the file? But you’re right that rendering Ward unconscious would have been the safer way to do things. (Which is why Mr. Rowboats says that this was definitely Coulson’s plan. I’m still not willing to buy that, though. See: Dr. Rowboats and Mr. Rowboats argue loudly about nerdy stuff in public, part 1,028.)
Regarding what Ward told Skye…my running theory is that what Ward told Skye about the HYDRA op is the truth — as he knows it, at least. I mean, for all the SWW crowd has wept and sobbed and gnashed teeth over woobie Ward’s innocence in everything, Ward was clearly pretty high up the HYDRA chain. He knew stuff about secret global communications. He knew stuff about past ops that he wasn’t involved in. (He knew the whole HYDRA plan, is what I’m saying, and had access to any information he wanted.) So it would be entirely possible for him to, once he had the basic ‘facts’ Raina gave him, put it together and figure out what the HYDRA op was, and find information about it. So, yeah, I believe there was a HYDRA op that was somehow involved in Skye’s origin story…but I don’t think we have any reliable narrator to give us the whole story, if that makes sense.
Which, OMG, I hadn’t fully appreciated until right this second that we don’t actually know Lumley and Avery’s SHIELD/HYDRA alliance?!? Like, we don’t know whether the SHIELD op they were on was actually a HYDRA op, or whether there was a separate HYDRA op that ran into a SHIELD op? I dislike that question a lot because it’s important to me that SHIELD tried to protect Skye with the shadow protocol/orphanage. (But, as has been pointed out, Whitehall/Kraken ran a girls orphanage…)
Yeah, I fear for Skye — two of our four villains so far have a direct, creepy, stalker-y, personal interest in her (Ward and her dad), and two other ones might have detached, semi-scientific evil interests in her (Raina and Whitehall). And with whatever might happen to her, and with whatever she might learn, she’s going to have a rough time of it this season…before she comes through it all perfectly and like a morally flawless badass, of course.
Ward's Knowledge
lastcenturykindagirl said: Ward suggesting it was HYDRA that attempted to steal Skye was new information not provided by his convo with Raina.
YES! OMG.
So, my immediate theory was that once he was given the background information, Ward was able to link the details of Skye's story (as related by Raina) to a known HYDRA Op? (Since he was relatively high up, thanks to Garrett, and had lots of knowledge and access to information?)
But maybe it connects to whoever his other source is? Theories?
DO WE HAVE THEORIES? I WANT ALL THE THEORIES!
I don't want to add to the mess happening in the comments on "torn apart by a wolf in a mask," but I just wanted say that I'm with you 100% on everything, and I think you've handled yourself gracefully.
Thank you for saying that. :)
You know, there are a lot of lovely, smart, supportive people in the AoS fandom (especially doing the Skoulson thing, but also everyone down with Skye, May, and Simmons above all). This note and that fact gave me big smiles this afternoon, which I shall use to finish some fluffy porn that won’t piss anyone off or get any angry notes.
