there are very strong opinions on rika on both ends of the spectrum (and inbetween) in this fandom - i get where you all are coming from. but this isn’t to analyze t h a t at the moment, just to analyze the art released for her birthday.
so, when i first saw it, it was bittersweet - because it featured sally. i believe it showed maybe…how happy she could’ve been/she almost was pre-sally’s death? i think it’s meant to be in the past. or show a future that didn’t happen/could’ve happened.
there are many twists and turns into rika’s change and as she turns into the “savior”. but i think we can say that literally and metaphorically rika’s change is marked heavily by sally’s death - it’s a very specific turning point. a before and after almost, if you will. and it has a specific and deeper meaning to rika’s character development at that point of the story.
quick edit: i also think it could show (since it is so close to halloween) sally coming back to see her as a sprit too and greeting her lovingly, happily - maybe even after all this time.

Every time I discover something new about this game I feel like a genius!!
(You always get to hear so many complaints about Cheritz writing making no sense, but I think those complaints are unfair (at least on what concerns to the consistency of their characters)
Is just that Cheritz use of the "show, don't tell" rule is top notch and you are always watching things from the point of view of a certain character, and if the perception of reality of said character is distorted (as with Rika) that makes things more difficult to understand..
But with enough time and thinking... Everything makes sense, everything is right there...)
