Chapter Three: The Voice
Frisk jumped as they heard the voice again. Who was it? Why did they want Frisk to kill the monster? It hadn't done anything wrong, Frisk didn't want to hurt it!
“KILL IT NOW OR IT WILL KILL YOU!"
Frisk panicked, would it really kill them if they showed it mercy? Frisk gulped and raised their stick. Would it be hard to kill the monster? Flowey had said that their SOUL had started out weak, did that mean that they were weak? Frisk shook their head. It didn't matter, they had to defend themself. Frisk adjusted their grip on the stick, and swung it at the small white frog with all their might, and…
The monster turned to dust.
Was that it? Was that all it took to kill a monster? Was it really that easy? Frisk looked at the pile of dust.
“See? It's not that hard,” said the voice, and whoever they were, they were right.
It hadn't been that hard.
Frisk felt bad for doing it, but…
It would have killed them if they hadn't, right?
“That’s right,” said the voice “it would have. And that's why you need to kill all of them, because they will all kill you, but only if you give them the chance.”
Frisk blinked. They would? Yes, of course they would kill them. But Frisk was ready, and they would kill first. But Frisk had one worry. So they asked the voice out loud, what about Toriel?
“... what about Toriel? And you don't need to speak out loud, I can hear you.” the voice responded. Frisk tilted their head in confusion. What did the voice mean when it said it could hear them? Could it hear Frisk's thoughts? “Yes I can hear your thoughts,” said the voice, sounding irritated, “now tell me why you're so worried about Toriel.”
Frisk nodded and explained in their head that they were worried about Toriel because of how strong she was, Frisk was worried that they were not strong enough to defeat her. Frisk explained how Flowey had easily defeated them, and then Toriel had easily defeated Flowey, so Toriel must be very strong.
“Ugh, do NOT mention that stupid flower again, he's cowardly and weak and he can't do what needs to be done.” the voice said. Frisk tilted their head in confusion, but nodded anyways. “and about Toriel, it shouldn't be too hard, you just need to gain enough LV to kill her, she can't stay with you forever, so you should get a chance to get more LV soon.” Frisk nodded, but they were still confused, how did they get more LV?
“Seriously? You don't know? That idiot flower couldn't even tell you that?” Frisk heard the voice sigh “You get LV from killing, the more you kill, the more LV you gain, and the stronger you get, now hurry up, Toriel will be wondering where you are by now.”
At that moment, Frisk heard Toriel's voice calling them, “My child! My child, are you coming?” Frisk ran to catch up with Toriel, and they continued through the Ruins.
Frisk did not hear the voice for the rest of the time they were with Toriel. Toriel led Frisk over to an odd bridge with spikes, but there seemed to be a path where the spikes disappeared. Next, Toriel had Frisk press two switches to proceed to the next room, where she asked Frisk to simply walk to the end of the room. And finally, after her “test of independence”, she left, telling Frisk not to leave the room, and leaving them alone.
Frisk left immediately after Toriel walked out of the room, not caring if she was still there, they could sneak quietly behind her, killing monsters and gaining LV. Surprisingly, however, Toriel was nowhere to be found when Frisk left the room. How has she moved so fast? Frisk shook their head, it didn't matter, they had to focus on gaining more LV and killing all of the monsters.
Frisk continued through the Ruins, killing every monster they encountered. As they went, the voice returned, urging them on at every odd star they touched.
“15 left”
Frisk didn't know how the voice knew how many monsters they had left to kill.
“10 left”
But it was nice to hear the voice letting them know how much more work they had left.
“5 left”
Even if they seemed to be talking to themselves more than Frisk.
“4 left"
And with each kill…
“3 left”
Frisk felt a bit less.
“2 left”
After all…
The monsters deserved it, if Frisk didn't kill the monsters first, then they would kill Frisk.
“1 left”
And when Frisk killed the very last monster in the Ruins…
“Determination”
They felt absolutely nothing at all.
