Scanlan,

     I’m kind of sick and tired of talking into an ear piece that doesn’t respond, so why am I writing a letter to someone who probably won’t receive it? This is way more effort than it’s worth, but my voice has given out from the stress and anger. I have many complicated feelings about the last few weeks alone, and the letter you gave me some time ago is still clenched inside my armor as kept promise. So it left me thinking, maybe this burden wouldn't feel so heavy if I left you letters of how my life has been without you.

      After you left, I went to Emon to help the people recover and heal. I couldn’t just sit back and do nothing after everything we did to free people from their grasp. Especially since, if I did stay, I could only think about you, and that would get me no where.

     It’s frustrating to see the impact your absence has left as we struggle to survive in battle. The silence of the field is felt and heavy. Yet, a new member has graced the team and brought a sort of arrogant finesse to over season this group. I’ve tried to do what I can to mold him into a piece of our puzzle, but I don’t think anyone can fit where your space was, and I don’t want them to. He has a lot of attributes that remind me of you, but they all fall short in comparison. Though, the talking he does falls only a smidge shorter. And, he even has a robot that follows his ( and my ) every command, which is the only plus I can find for now. 

     It’s not you, and that’s what hurts.

❛❛ i'm fine! really! so... so fine. ❜❜ the lie fizzles out pathetically. then tensed shoulders give way, and her pointed ears droop ever slightly. ❛❛ alright, yes. i've been crying, ❜❜ the halfling admits. as if it hadn't been painfully obvious from the streaks of druidic kohl framing her freckled cheeks, or the fact that scanlan's hammock had been mere inches away from her midnight spiral. keyleth couldn't quite name the reason for the sudden outburst, but perhaps because there was litany of reasons.

over the long weeks they'd spent in the underdark, there was no time for true reflection, and it seemed she'd been storing a refinery of bottled emotions beneath her throat, which only now, in the much awaited but dreadful quiet, did she have the opportunity to inspect them. ❛❛ i think i really messed up down there, scanlan. between losing grog, and aligning with a mind flayer who almost turned your brain to soup. . . these adventures are getting scarier by the second, and i'm afraid i don't have any idea what i'm doing. ❜❜

to the unaware eye, it might seem as though the two had simply met at the bar, both charming the pants off the other in the hopes of perhaps finding a room. with vax propped with an elbow against the bar, chin in his hand, a dazed smile upon his lips as he watches the gnome spin his dazzling words. amorous strangers, rather than the dearest of friends, and sweetest of lovers, fingers sporting matching rings.

" hmmm, " comes a soft hum from vax's throat, bowing ever closer into the hypnosis of his darling's words. " maybe you should write a song about it. you can sing it for me. tell me how pretty I am. "

no . no it’s not his fault . it is his fault . it’s her fault . it’s both of their fault . & it’s neither of their fault . it’s . . . more complicated than she’ll ever be able to explain . she loves him , more than she thinks she’s ever been able to convey . she shakes her head as he looks at her with that aching look in his big brown eyes , taking his hands in hers . he’s given her this life , a wonderful life full of love & laughter & truthfully , he’s made her life better than she ever could’ve imagined . he’s given her the best years of her life . & she thinks . . . she knows that she’s done the same . that their kids & their life has been just as fulfilling for him as it’s been for her . & she doesn’t think anyone will ever love her the way that scanlan has , with his whole heart , just as she’s given him hers . they just . . . aren’t the same , they both need different things & that’s not a bad thing either . but if she’s the one that has to do this , then she’ll do it . so she can see him happy . so they can both be happy instead of trying to make their marriage work when it’s not .  ❛  no . no , it’s not . i don’t want you to ever think that because it’s not your fault . you’ve changed me in so many ways , scanlan , i never would’ve gotten here . i never would’ve had this family . i never would’ve had the life that we’ve shared , without you . we’ve done so much good for each other . but . . . i think we’ve always known there was a time limit on us . . .  & it’s not like i don’t love you anymore because i do , my heart will be with you always .  ❜   her fingers find his cheek & she tries to ignore the tears welling in her own eyes .  ❛  i’d never want to stamp out that part of you that needs to wander . i fell in love with it a long time ago . so , you go wander & i’ll be in whitestone anytime you miss me .  ❜  like i’ll be missing you .

“you’re a hard man to find when you wanna be,” mera says as she joins @mythcarvd. already, it’s clear she’s jittery about something. she plays it off by feigning disinterest, though the façade is flimsy at best. “figured i’d make sure you weren’t getting into any trouble without me,” her mouth leans into a grin, but her heart’s not in it.

she looks like shit, and her vision is fuzzy; a quick body check tells her that, yes, she is, in fact, alive. her body hurts. she can even feel warm liquid trickling down one side of her face, but she’s up.

“unfortunately,” she groans, palming at one of her temples. “i just got my shit rocked. fuck. what the hell was that?”

                    𝐒𝐇𝐄'𝐒 𝐃𝐑𝐔𝐍𝐊 —- so very , very drunk . it's a creeping sort of realization that washes over her slowly and brings with it a smattering of disjointed thoughts . how long ago had her nose gone numb ? had it been before or after her vision started to swim ? when had she sat herself across from @mythcarvd and decided that he was the best suited among their motley crew to hear her woes , the one to trust with all of the secrets she held closest to her chest ?

                    𝐒𝐇𝐄 𝐆𝐑𝐈𝐌𝐀𝐂𝐄𝐒 at that . there isn't enough ale in all the taverns of exandria to comfortably have scanlan and any mention of her chest in the same musing .

                    𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐍 𝐀𝐒 𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐁𝐑𝐈𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐃 as she is —- or perhaps because of it —- his company is decidedly enjoyable . it's been too long since they've done ... whatever they're doing , and longer still without the others . the others ! what had she been saying about them ? or had it been about only one " other " in particular ?
