from the sky to the sea , the free fall doesn't hit him when he crashes through the surface into the water . it takes him when he feels the tide around his legs , when he feels the pull that keeps him from pulling himself upwards ( most of his strength left when they hurtled over the cliff , the only way to break the chase ) . now he is reaping the rewards of his impulsive decisions , because nothing of his gear is going to save him from the tide that was not only the force of nature but enhanced with the magical force surrounding this city , and he doesn't even want to think about what else dirtied the water so close to the coast . lost to his own devices , to the tide , his only thought besides survival is simple - where is she?
the fall was not made solo , not a gamble made for his own stupid need to get out of the awful situations he has a true talent to get himself into . it was a fall for two , initiated by the way he grabbed her and threw both of them downwards and into the ocean , knowing full well that if one of them could make it out of there it'd be better than neither of them , better than either or both of them tortured to an inch of their lives because of the sick sense of superiority that dictated this world apparently needed keyleth - apparently needed her more than she needed herself , or vax needed her . a lie , obviously , but one he is paying for ignoring now when he looks around while he is sinking , unable to see her .
unable to see her or to escape , he does not expect the undercurrent suddenly changing and pushing him back up . it is fast enough for the water to burn in his nostrils , but when he breaks through the water line he cares very little for any residual discomfort to ensure his survival . when he turns his head around now , he can find the auburn burn of her right behind him , not kicking water like he did but almost parting it . it was not by luck that keyleth found herself breaking the surface of the oil-slicked water. no, she had the countless diving drills and bio-modifications in some unmarked facility to thank for that. at the time, she didn't understand what it was all for, just that the lab coats were preparing her for something. something big enough to warrant this never-ending pursuit. and apparently, something even harsher than the dissonant waves that pushed and pulled her towards the jagged outcrops of the coastline. even if she managed to stay afloat, she did a poor job of making her way to the shore. because the tumble was not taken alone.
❛❛ vax ? ❜❜ she called, but saw no signs of him. not even the water was as chilling as the panic that gripped her then. where is he? she could have sworn she felt his grasp on her only seconds before. but how many seconds? was it before or after the fall? . . . she couldn't remember. couldn't think. couldn't breathe. ❛❛ vax ?! ❜❜ the sound was strangled. guttural. something was wrong. he should have caught up by now. not even the shallowness of her breath could keep her from diving back into the muddied waters.
the brine burned, and the dirt and muck obscured anything her eyes could hope to see. but she felt . . . that something. it started as a hum in her ear, a churning in her blood, and then a tumultuous, ever shifting, untamable presence crying out to her soul. she understood then: the fury of the poisoned tides, the outrage of the vengeful undertow. how they lashed out like a dying rabid animal against everything that intruded, anything that did not belong here. including him. and vax was helpless in the decent.
what happened next, keyleth couldn't quite explain. all she knew was that vax was too far out of reach. desperation had stolen her last breath, and it pleaded to whomever or whatever might listen to not let him die here. not like this. not when it had been her fault he'd been dragged into this mess. the current would bring him back to her. she needed him back. demanded him back. and that demand was louder than the fury of the ocean.
water was older than everything, so it remembered this ancient pact. reluctantly but surely, it listened. and they were both brought back to shore, with vax rightfully confused, but alive and safe against keyleth's hammering chest. the quip that washed up with him confirmed that he was still well enough in the head too. and it's immediately met with eager arms, hugging, or rather, smothering him from behind.

i love how keyleth's father is actually so sweet !! and very supportive !! but also a perfect example of how loving and supportive parents are not without fault and can still struggle to offer support in the way that resonates best with their child. and i think this is one of the things that the animation did touch on in a perfectly subtle way because when you pay attention to the scene at pyrah, when keyleth is freaking out saying she can't close the rift, korrin encourages her by saying "of course you can. you're as strong as your mother, maybe even stronger."
but how keyleth reacts to this !! says so much about their dynamic !! she goes from looking scared and unsure to honestly looking even more sad and discouraged than she was before. as if this was the last thing she needed to hear and quite frankly??? it was. although it has always come from a place of love and wanting to see his daughter succeed, korrin has always projected his fears and his trauma of losing vilya onto keyleth, and he did so by making her study harder than everyone else, and much sooner than everyone else to see if that was the edge vilya had been missing.
but in taking that approach of encouragement, he forced keyleth into a perpetual state of comparison where she could never recognize her strength and talent as an individual, but always struggled to mold herself into the better version of her mother, whom she already viewed as being infallible. and this is literally the biggest reason for her struggles with perfectionism, unrealistic expectations, and low self esteem. so it's no surprise that while these words push her to focus and perform well enough to meet her father's expectations -- it's not enough to close the rift. and then we get vilya's voice !!
and the difference here !! where she's being told to look inward, listen to HER power, instead of trying to emulate someone else's, and baby girl does !! she listens !! and it's not about being in her mother's shadow anymore !! she's walking that same path, but in her way, with her own strength !! and she does it !! she passes through fire and i need to lie down and cry about it for several more years thanks !!
the darkness is only as dark as one makes it . he has history with turning it pitch-black , with tunnelling all of his animosity and despair into nothingness , into a place where no one could return from so easily . it has always been there , this vein beneath the dichotomy of his kinder moments and rising moods , that dangerous maw always ready to swallow him whole . now it has and it was no maw but a beak , and teeth were not only teeth as they were threads binding him together into a neatly packaged deal he had no idea the consequences of yet . that doesn't dismay the action of the deal itself , as he knows there is no reality or life he would have acted differently , but it makes the looming threat ahead darker than black .
maybe this is why he has always reached for keyleth subconsciously and consciously . why he would find a moment of stillness and turn his ear towards her , regard her words with the weight he wants them to have in the future , let her exist close enough to him to see when she faltered and to prop her back up when she needed some help . the rest she usually did all by herself , even when it would take longer for her to realize it . but it is always like that in the throw of things - outsiders and onlookers always realize your own capabilities faster , see them better , which might be why the two of them have slowly gravitated towards each other among individual and mutual fuck-ups and hopes ( well , vax'ildan has never been exactly slow in his falling , but he was patient . still is . )
" right . i set myself up for that , " he answers her own bite into humour with a faint hint of his own , with some of the ease that has always prevailed between the two of them . with keyleth there is little to no acting , there is no false bravado or even tightly-kept stoicism to push her away . he could never be that cruel , no matter how cruel he was to himself or the world around him these past few weeks . " i've been sleeping like shit . why else would we be chatting in front of a dying fire in the middle of the night and not on a nice walk through the constantly murderous countryside? " he tries , the edge of a smile pulling at his mouth , letting her pull that out of him in the early hour of the morning . he falls for her over and over again , it seems unending .
as he watches her , awe strikes its way into his heart with undiluted clarity . the fire seems dimmer and dimmer by the minute , but keyleth in front of him seems more assured and realer than anything else in the room . in a way she is , with fears so similar to his own and unknown burdens of the future too , and with rage and hope in equally forceful measure that has always inspired him - nearly dazed him . now it makes him move , stretching out on the rug and settling on the chrysanthemums , his head close to her crossed knees . " before you try something , can i just say? you can tell me anything , no matter how big or small it is . if you are ever afraid , or if you are happy , i want to hear about all of that , too . " eyes not yet closed , he blinks up at her . " okay , try something . i trust you . "
he was not a perfect man. she knew it was a hard life that dragged vax'ildan through the whetstone of survival to turn sharp his edges, but she was no less without her own faults, and counted herself lucky to be one of the few he allowed to seek refuge behind the blunted ends of him. lucky to be the one who breaks through this dismal cloud and finds his charming humor and rapport with her still there, harbored inside a heart that was probably the purest thing she'd ever come to know. she wonders if she even deserved to hold such a hallowed place in it as he assures every shade of her emotions could be kept safe with him.
❛❛ i know, vax, ❜❜ she murmured, cradling his inverted cheek in her hand, ❛❛ -- -- and i thank you for always listening. ❜❜ there wasn't much she didn't allow herself to share with him already, aside for the things she hid from herself. the feelings she could not give a name to, let alone speak on. hers is the subtler decent, to a rose-petaled heart unfolding in its own time, and only ever falling into his hands in pieces. this will be the petal she offers him tonight:

❛❛ she'd tell me that when we sleep, our spirit takes flight to the sky, where the clouds shape our dreams. and if i ever felt scared or lost up there, to remember that even when the moon comes and goes in phases, the stars are fixed points, and they'll always be there to light the path to a safer place. all it takes is holding on to one. ❜❜ gently, a single orb drifts down, burning brighter than the rest, to settle just a few inches above vax's sightline.

torchlight spills in ribbons through the thick, woody vines that cascade over the mouth of a hidden grotto, flittering past with the sound of gruff voices cursing their aimless pursuit. keyleth holds her breath when one approaches too close, fingers humming with magic, ready to retract claws when the moment calls for it, but the bramble and the shade hides the two elven girls well enough.
eventually, the footsteps fade out into the velvet wind whistle and muffled night-time chittering of the forest, a sound more calming than a mother's safe embrace. it's in this where keyleth allows an exhale which comes out more like a strained laugh. ❛❛ that was a close one, huh? ❜❜ her wooden staff taps the ground, bestrewing faint wisps of veilfire, dimmly revealing the grotto to be a small and crumbling alter to an unrecognizable deity. one would assume it was untouched and unkept for over an age -- save for the incongruous tomes and knick-knacks that reclaimed the moss-laced corners.
❛❛ i think they've all gone now, but it's probably best to wait here a bit longer to be safe, ❜❜ she says, sitting across from the outsider she so recklessly plucked away from danger. ❛❛ why were the shemlen after you anyway? ❜❜

❛❛ i'm fine! really! so... so fine. ❜❜ the lie fizzles out pathetically. then tensed shoulders give way, and her pointed ears droop ever slightly. ❛❛ alright, yes. i've been crying, ❜❜ the halfling admits. as if it hadn't been painfully obvious from the streaks of druidic kohl framing her freckled cheeks, or the fact that scanlan's hammock had been mere inches away from her midnight spiral. keyleth couldn't quite name the reason for the sudden outburst, but perhaps because there was litany of reasons.
over the long weeks they'd spent in the underdark, there was no time for true reflection, and it seemed she'd been storing a refinery of bottled emotions beneath her throat, which only now, in the much awaited but dreadful quiet, did she have the opportunity to inspect them. ❛❛ i think i really messed up down there, scanlan. between losing grog, and aligning with a mind flayer who almost turned your brain to soup. . . these adventures are getting scarier by the second, and i'm afraid i don't have any idea what i'm doing. ❜❜
the fire does nothing but provide light . real warmth eludes him , it is like he can't exude it from himself anymore , can't pull it into himself either unlike he used to . it is the aching kind of cold , bone-deep and stifling to a bothersome degree he doesn't wish to dig through , and it sits deepest after the nightmares haunt him and the early hours of the morning witness his breakdowns with morbid fascination . now there's a new bystander , now there's keyleth next to him so much like a fire , reaching for the inner lining of him right above his bone , reaching to fix the marrow of him if she could . her heart has always been like this , a growing vine around his ruins .
it's why lying to her is useless . vax doesn't lie as a default ( unless it ensures survival ) but he can always sense the feeling of guilt right at the grasps of his fingers when he has to lie to her . to even try is stupid , so he doesn't . so he wraps himself in endless silences that grow into a wall , and then he cracks when he opens his mouth . he's a marvellous strategist like this - this is why he doesn't craft their plans , first in line for delivery and not creation . and she is much the same though less prone to his silences . her doubt is like a scream in the wild where his lies down to die quieter , somehow they always cross each other anyway , seeing the same wound and finding no one has stitched it up yet . hands-on approach between two idealists , two awfully bleeding consciences .
" emon was - i don't want to think about it . " which is to say that he thinks about it too much - this is what their mother saw , this is the fatal fate of their bloodline . the fire hurts even more when he hears how it tears at keyleth in a different way . where vax could find so much of his worry in the past , she has a much longer road to go than each of them , and would be the only one to remember every fire all to the end . when she looks at him , he finds most of his fears reflected - the same vine as ever against his stone . faster than a raven's wing , even more importantly already claiming space long before . " i know there is a lot of the future where you will be by yourself . but i can tell you none of us want to go earlier than we must . we don't want to abandon you . i don't want to , kiki . you tell me you all look out for me , but we all try the same for you . it's mutual . you aren't losing me , okay? not as long as i have a say in it . "
her hand touches his and he takes to it like a starved animal to water or food , unfolding his palm under hers and intertwining their hands . if his grip is desperate , is so much more telling than the subdued cold he's been harbouring , then she is the only one to ever carry this truth . she knows anyway , she knows already . it has never been about hiding , his patience a fortress amidst the broken ends of him , his patience the sole survivor of hope amidst so much premature grief . he'd wait two lifetimes for her , not in hope of more but just for her to know he is there . " percy and me is a complicated . . . matter . i can't promise you anything right now . i know he's your best friend , " he tells her , glancing to the ceiling and then back at her , unable to look anywhere else but at her . the fire dulls against her presence , mere ember to an entire flame . "
even if she does not touch on the full truth of what grips her, he sees it so transparently. and she thinks it has always been about this: a precision of movement, the tenderest words thrown swift and true, locked in on the sun dial shadow of her most present hurt, as if to say i see you, and i will always meet you here, where you need me most.

like listen tlovm's disney-princess coded keyleth was my first love before i jumped into the campaigns. she's sweet, she's funny, she's a treasure, near & dear to my heart, but im growing tired of the lack of depth and big omissions like this from the show. i want the female rage, i want her butting heads w the group, i want her weary and distrustful of the gods, i want her struggling to open her heart and talking about the very very big and valid reasons why she's hesitant to get attached to a group that she's likely to outlive by centuries. y'know just all the things marisha intensionally did to make this sheltered lil ashari babe COMPLEX AND FLAWED instead of leaning exclusively on her quirky awkwardness.
and i'm still livid about the lack of quality girl boss moments and bonding time, but after keyleth and vex spent a whole episode without saying a word to each other i think i've resigned to the fact that the writers have no idea how to write women and that's why we're here. so to my fellow vm ladies, i'm holding your hand, and i'm asking us to re-write these wrongs <3
