Because I’m endlessly amused by tropes and the Hero’s Journey story structure:
A roguishly beautiful and downtrodden orphan steals something shiny in the market.
A friend/wise old man/mentor/soothsayer tries to intervene. “Stop, thief! Listen up! Don't you know that if you keep this up, you're bound to become the next Chosen One?” *Thinks for a moment* “Actually, come to think of it, I could use an adventurer like you on a Quest to the dangerous Special World! Come back!"
But the thief keeps running. “I’m not interested in any Quests!”
“You just refused the Call to Adventure! You're now doomed to a life of constant adventure!”
While avoiding the city guards, the thief busts through a gate and calls back over a shoulder, “That doesn’t even make sense!”
The Mentor shrugs. “That was the First Threshold that you just crossed! There’s no returning from that until you have the Elixir! Have fun mucking about in the Special World! Byyyyye!”
