she crafted him, delicate hands folding paper together to form a visage of a handsome man, painting colors upon the white, filling it up with a human’s heart and bones. then, with magic and her abilities, she kissed his forehead and gave him life.
osakabe shin'ichi, who started life as a man than a child, but was her dearest son nonetheless. a tall, handsome man who wandered around himeji castle with her, aware of the secrets and history that she would tell him about in her gentle voice. of how once upon a time, this was not a castle but instead a shrine meant for her.
“and no longer were there people who worshiped osakabegami, instead all they know is of osakabe hime, the lady hidden within himeji castle.” she whispered, holding his hand as they watch the city outside of the palace. thumb caressing his hand, the beautiful lady let loose a small laugh that sounded like the gentle chiming of bells. “my dear boy, let it be known that humans know evils and remember them more than they shall ever remember a kind deed.”
reaching up to the top of his head, she smooths his hair, the kind smile on her face a contrast to her vicious words. “and i shall teach you my dear, on how to leave a mark among such foolish beings.”

he started off as nothing in soul, holding a heart and bones but not flesh. specially made by his mother, her cherished son that was her only company in the lonely castle. yet, even though they remained isolated from the world, they were not that much of a fool to not learn how to survive outside.
“we see the heart, their truest desires. then from there, we take what we know and use them as we please.” she informed him, sharp eyes looking to him as they folded origami together. small animal spirits chattering around them, their only other companions. “it’s easy you see, how to make them grovel as long as you offer them what they wish.”
“isn’t that right takeyama-san?” she beamed to the man across them, head and knees on the ground. small whimpers emitting from the human who sneaked into the castle in attempts to steal from it. shin'ichi would look on with an even gaze, still much like a doll as he learned from his mother all she knew.
the man did not dare to look up to their faces, and he begged for forgiveness. mother will then let him go with promise of offers, a simple laptop to help them access the modern world better or his life will be at stake.
quick and easy, he tried to make sure he learned to the best of his abilities.

“i love you mother.” were his first words for the woman who gave him life.
whether it was said honestly, or because he knew what she desired—neither would say. however, no matter the reason, she enveloped him in her arms. he did not truly feel warmth, but he felt that her hug was so.
it was a warm day in himeji castle, cherry blossoms petals blowing in as they huddled close together as mother and son.

his mother taught him manipulation and deceit, the internet taught him character and the people that existed outside, then the two gave him the idea what humans, no, individuals were. from there, osakabe shin'ichi truly began to understand what it was like to live.
he spoke with class, his expressions become ‘easier’ to read, picked up skills of his own and became his own person. his mother would support him in any path he took. he respected and never over stepped boundaries.
it was a peaceful time. learning from her and holding a pleasant relationship.
before he knew it, sixteen years have passed since then. he made them tea and they sat in silence as the cherry blossoms bloomed once again during this fine spring. he did not touch his cup, but the woman took it and smiled at him.
it was a motherly smile.
“i love you my dear son.” her gentle voice murmured, drinking the tea normally. she sets her glass down as she finished, then shut her eyes.
moments passed, before laughter bubbled up out of his throat. “you’re a fool, such a fool.”
yet his cheeks are wet, tears running down this beautiful spring day.

she laid next to him. ever so beautiful, so much more peaceful in her sleep as he folded paper cranes and put them into a jar. then, breaking the pleasant silence was his own soft-toned voice. “whilst you sleep, let me tell you a story dear mother.”
“there was a man a demon loved, his heart was true in her eyes and she cared for him so. they seemed to be perfect for each other, until one day she found out the man held an artifact that blinded her all-seeing vision.” he started off, smiling kindly as he continued to reform paper into cranes. “she found out he had a son with another woman, and in her rage of being betrayed by humans once again—schemed for the family to come and die in her hands.”
“she was successful. she did as she planned. yet, even with such a success…she fell into despair as she realized the man truly did love her and regretted his actions. lonely, alone, and guilty—she tried to fill up the hole in her heart by taking the son’s heart and made her own child. it will not be the same, not be the way she envisioned it to be, but it will be enough.” he finished the thousandth crane, placing it into the glass case and shut it as he shut his eyes and silently made a wish.
“i’m going out now, i think i need to interact with others. times are changing, and i very much would love to remind people yokais aren’t fun to be trifled with.” he laughed—it sounded similar to her’s. watching as her chest rose up and down, he kissed her forehead gently.
“…see you later. i’ll be in mythos now, but i’ll visit sometimes.” he stood up, and soon he left the castle.
it was time to make his mark.
