Rain - Mewtwo & Nurse Joy

Oh boy, so this took a lot longer than I had hoped. OTL

As mentioned in my WIP/Sketches post, my boyfriend @H-Falcon and I have been on a Pokémon nostalgia trip as of late. Perhaps more specifically, a Mewtwo/Nurse Joy trip. Many many eons ago he wrote a lemon fanfic ship of these two, and revisiting his story has greatly inspired me to draw out different illustrations with them. This scene in particular was just a random idea I had (probably because of all the rain we got this spring). I wanted to just draw something that felt calm considering everything going on in the world, and see Mewtwo in a scene you might not usually see him in. I've also been particularly interested in seeing Mewtwo, and the Pokemon anime in general, as it appeared back in the early days of the first movie and first few seasons, as that was a huge part of my childhood + favorite visual representation/art style and I miss the way everything used to look. So my goal with this illustration, and several other little projects I've been working on atm, was to try and replicate that as best as I could, plus just making it look like a scene straight out of a movie with just enough context to hopefully pique the viewer as to what is going on here. I really enjoy story telling so those types of illustrations interest me the most. Interestingly enough, Falcon enjoyed the concept of this scene so much, he wrote out a new scene based on this illustration to continue his story, and has been messing with it on and off as inspiration strikes him. I keep nudging him to work on it again as he left it in limbo all those years ago due to real life circumstances, so we'll have to see where that goes. n_n And btw for clarification, this is intended to take place involving the first movie Mewtwo and the same Nurse Joy about a year or so after the events from the movie. And yes I intend to share some more... intimate moments with these two. I'll also be posting some close ups since poor Butterfree is barely visible on that thar teapot.

NOTE: I know I’ve mentioned the following before from time to time, but I like to make sure my newest followers are on board too. For those who still have yet to hear the radio drama Myuutsu no Tanjou (The Birth of Mewtwo), please know that my friend piraticoctopus did upload it to Youtube over a year ago with subtitles. Please click the links below to listen/read, and be sure to send her a thanks for her awesome contribution to the Pokémon community! Images in this post are from Copycat. The entire accompanying picture booklet (there’s a lot more pages) is available here as scans. Part 1 - The Phantom Myuu.

Sakaki (Giovanni), serving as the narrator, brings us back to twenty years before the “birth” of Myuutsu, to when his mother served as the leader of the Rocket Gang (Team Rocket). Reporting to this woman was Miyamoto, a top agent and the mother of Musashi (Jessie), who has a tape recording of Myuu’s voice -- the only tangible evidence of the pokémon’s existence. Miyamoto goes to South America to find Myuu. There’s a lot of interesting information revealed about Myuu here... but I won’t spoil it. Part 2 - The Birth of Myuutsu.

Takes place far later than Part 1. Dr. Fuji, the lead scientist behind Myuutsu’s creation, teams up with Sakaki. Yet whereas Sakaki dreams of possessing the world’s most powerful pokémon, Dr. Fuji has other intentions -- above all, to master cloning technology so he can bring back his daughter Ai who died in a car accident. In this chapter, the dynamics of Dr. Fuji and Ai’s relationship are explored far more in depth than what was covered in the 10 minute anime adaptation. Meanwhile, Miyamoto continues her search for Myuu while profoundly missing her daughter. And oh... just what is it about Myuu in particular that makes its life force so superior and unique among all pokémon? Well, this chapter explores that too... Part 3 - Myuutsu and Ai.

From within his stasis tube, Myuutsu meets and converses with the copy (clone) of Ai. This is the chapter of which the anime adaptation is based upon, however, it contains a lot more detail. The focus is truly on them, rather than all of the copies. Furthermore, Ai and Myuutsu dive into some deep topics such as if they were made by God. And far away, Miyamoto still looks for Myuu, distraught that she has missed more milestones in Musashi’s life. For me this is not only my favorite chapter in the radio drama, but also my favorite thing in the entire history of the Pokémon anime. I first heard this back in December 1999 and now, in April 2015, I still feel my heartstrings get torn at... Part 4 - The World’s Strongest Pokémon. 

Myuutsu, heartbroken by the loss of Ai, questions where she has gone. He “asks” Dr. Fuji for an explanation only to become angered that the scientist believes he can revive her over and over as long as he has her base. For Myuutsu, there was only one Ai -- the Ai who befriended him. Furthermore, it is in this chapter that Mewtwo awakens/breaks out of the stasis tube, kills the scientists, and meets Sakaki (in other words, the same events as in the beginning of the first movie). The difference is that this is a bit deeper. Yes, Miyamoto is still searching for Myuu. Part 5 - Myuutsu’s Counterattack. 

Myuutsu is plagued by questions and with each passing day becomes more angered by his circumstances. Just as in the movie, he “works for” and then escapes Sakaki. Now free, he declares his counterattack. And still off in South America, Miyamoto seems to have lost her senses but declares she will never give up on her mission even though her daughter is now in her twenties.

I've only ever been 'objectified' in games aimed at kids like fusionfall, but games like tf2 i was basically bullied off. haven't played tf2 in years for medical reasons though. fast movement makes me sick :P

Bullying is one thing but objectification is, almost, a more subversive kind of bullying. One where both the bully and the bullied may not even be aware of the dynamic taking place. The thing about being objectified is that it takes away your personhood, i.e. you become an object, an idea, instead of a flesh-and-blood human being. You become a screen for someone to project their ideas and perceptions onto instead of being recognized as a fellow consciousness, an equal. Even existentialist philosophers like Sartre and Stendhal discuss the tug-of-war between consciousness and object, between being a vessel for someone’s ideas and being a real human being. Sartre writes that “Hell is other people,” and Stendhal has his crystallization theory.What’s nefarious about being placed on a pedestal in places like World of Warcraft is that you become a novelty. Even though nearly half of the playerbase is female, women and girls (emphasis on girls) are coddled and spoiled and venerated, i.e. put on a pedestal.

Fun fact: Myuutsu appears at 0:12 in the teaser trailer for the third movie (Entei movie). Why Myuutsu is in this trailer but not in the actual movie... well, that I don't know.
