I like your art alot
omg thank you
how good does one needs to be before they can set up commissions is there an amount of skill that needs to be achieved or does one just need to be confident in what they can do and make the most of their current ability
Hi there! There’s no real pre-determined skill level when it comes to art and selling your art, honestly. In a lot of cases, skill level in art can be entirely subjective since we all see things differently. I’ve seen artists on and off Tumblr from all different kinds of artistic backgrounds who are seasoned commissioners. So yeah, you just need the confidence and the moxie for it. Confidence is key, as is luck and an audience.I’ve typed up more advice below on selling your art in general, if you’d like to know more:1. Do what you love. Find out what you love drawing (in your case, traditional art) and keep doing it. Consistently. Work hard, I don’t draw nearly as much as I used to nowadays and it’s really been letting me down as far as gathering an audience and potential commissioners go. You can only improve and discover more about yourself and your art by committing yourself to your work, and consequently a wise commissioner will want to know if you can follow through with their request and may well judge this by looking at the history of your work.2. Research. Figure out how the business side of things works ahead of time to avoid any complications down the line. Know your prices, have examples up if possible, know what you’re willing to do and not willing to do, know how to carry a commission through while avoiding any potential setbacks, either on yours or the commissioner’s behalf. Don’t undercharge, but I definitely wouldn’t recommend overcharging either. Look at other commissioners and see how they go about taking commissions (I’ll have commission information up next month, if you’re interested in how I usually carry mine out). Find out what works for you.3. Advertise! As much as you possibly can. Get active within the art community and it will more often than not give back to you in due time. Join groups and share your work there, partake in competitions/contests, look for artistic work in places you normally wouldn’t and see what happens, etc. Seize every opportunity that you feel you can. You’ll make an audience in no time by doing all of this consistently.4. Know the difference between your fans and your commissioners, and how to appeal to both. This article explains this really, really well: http://chrisoatley.com/noartsold/?awt_l=7u0vg&awt_m=3dMoxWwwlJUGLtM5. Have a back-up plan. I would recommend one if you’re not making a liveable wage from your work just yet, and realistically don’t believe you will be anytime soon. Though this doesn’t mean you won’t eventually be doing what you really want to do for a living, we all gotta live somehow in the meantime.6. Enjoy what you’re doing, and don’t be too hard on yourself! We’re all learning, even the best of us. None of us are perfect, so there’s no attainable ultimate standard or right & wrong as far as art goes. The artists who have found a style that works for them and appeals to others have done so through practise and perseverance. There’s no reason you can’t do it either, if you really want to.Good luck! I believe in you. ;D
