hope is something you give yourself
“You must never give into despair. Allow yourself to slip down that road, and you surrender to your lowest instincts. In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself. “ - the fucking Uncle Iroh
my sibling vincent is an excellent, creative and incredibly unique artist and they wrote this quote in a gift that they gave my sister Liv. we grew up watching ATLA, and it’s one of those sibling bonds that you can hear of but never really know what it feels like, ya know? but they wrote this quote, and it reminded me of the power that humans have for themselves that I often forget.
I feel as if the progression of technology is a spectacular display of human capability but it also shows human disability. I’d imagine early hominids to have this astronomical self-reliance and trust for themselves because they had to engage with their barest of instincts to stay alive. but now, its seems so easy to stay alive without engaging in my power. that power to give myself hope. I used to pray for it, ask for it from other people or allow its absence to destroy me. but now, I just want to rely on myself and offer myself that gift of hope for this life.
